Love Comes Softly, by Janette Oke
Yeah, I know, I was just saying a week ago that I didn't think I could ever reread this book because although I loved it when I was a young teen there are things about it that would be too glaring now.
I LIED. I just reread it and...look, there are definitely frustrating things with this book but I enjoyed it anyways. Marty and Clark are both in pain and trying so hard and unable to talk about their feelings and doing their best to be good to each other, and I'm just like MY FEELINGS.
Things I didn't notice when I read this book as an oblivious teenager:
- the brief instance of corporal punishment
- the upholding of gender roles
- that moment of sexual attraction between them in the garden
- the emphasis on Marty learning to be Christian
- that the marriage of convenience-turned-to-love plotline is actually a really common trope in romance fiction
- the sheer quantity of coffee these people drink
