The thing about long overseas flights is that they give you lots of time to watch movies, which is great when you're too tired to focus well on a book. So earlier this week I saw two entire movies in one day! ALMOST UNPRECEDENTED quantities of visual media for me!

First: BREAKING NEWS I finally saw X-Men: Days of Future Past after everyone else who cares saw it long ago. I'm quite sure I have zero new insights to share. Here were my main reactions (no particular spoilers):

1. Welp, that was definitely a very dude-focused movie, even beyond the fact that they gave Kitty's role to Wolverine.
2. What a silly, ridiculous, and somehow enjoyable movie - I had no emotional investment AND YET I had fun.
3. Yes it's true Quicksilver is the best part of the movie. Please tell me there is a cut somewhere of all the Quicksilver bits and nothing else.
4. Wow young Charles and young Erik are both terrible people in ways that do not interest me at all.

Second: I rewatched The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and can I just say:

1. Wow I still have a million Narnia feels.
2. What a good.
3. (tho why must all the ugly and monstrous beings be the bad guys?)
4. So uh I believe in a free Narnia and all but also TILDA SWINTON QUEEN OF EVERYTHING.

Guess what I did? Wrote fic for the first time in nearly three months AWWW YEAH. (and because apparently I am contrary like that, it isn't any of the interesting suggestions y'all gave me in my post about kink_bingo. Whoops. MAYBE THE NEXT ONE WILL BE?)

This is for the crossdressing square. Thanks to my wonderful betas, [personal profile] sentientcitizen and [personal profile] verity!

You probably gathered from my earlier post that my thesis has to do with The Thousand and One Nights.

Hence, I've been reading a lot of that lately. And I have Thoughts!

A lot of these thoughts have to do with the translator. In which I find Edward Lane strangely endearing )

I have other thoughts too, of course. I mean, I read (or skimmed) nearly 2000 pages of stories in only a few days, and did a LOT of writing and thinking about them. OF COURSE I have other thoughts! Here are a few more.

Have some Narnia related thoughts )

And some more OT3 thoughts, with bonus lesbians. )

In conclusion, I want a million 1001 Nights fanfics, about EVERYTHING. Fixing the racefail and disabilityfail and religionfail and feminismfail and all that, having fun with the excellent bits of homoeroticism (finding a young man SO BEAUTIFUL and FALLING IN LOVE WITH HIM and adopting him as a son. Right. I bet your thoughts are so fatherly.), having fun with the total crackyness, doing AUs and crossovers and basically EVERYTHING ELSE IMAGINABLE. There is so much that could be done with these stories!

As always when I return from vacation (HI! I'M BACK!) my flist/rlist is an intimidating creature. SO MUCH TO READ. This is not helped by the proliferation of Yuletide rec posts! So. Uh. I haven't read a blessed thing in my flist/rlist yet (and I haven't even responded to some comments from before I left on vacation!), but I'm already two days late for posting my end-of-year sum up of the books I've read over the course of the past year. (though four days earlier than I managed it last year!

This was a new year's resolution I made two years ago, and actually succeeded in accomplishing: to record every single book I read. And I liked doing it enough that I did it again, and am going to continue doing it for the foreseeable future.

I know, I know, most people at the end of the year post about the last year's worth of fic they've written or similar fandom-in-review type things. But last year I did that sort of post on my LJ's anniversary, and I simply can't break with a one-year-old tradition, can I? Of course not. (though this year's edition of it will be rather more in-depth, since I've been a much more prolific writer and podficcer! And the year's only half over!)

Anyways, here follows the books I read in 2010, plus commentary thereon )

So I reread Voyage of the Dawntreader over the last couple days, in response to seeing the movie. Spoilers for the book and the film. )

Today I got to see the latest of the Narnia movies! There was no way I wasn’t going to see it – the Narnia books were a mainstay of my childhood, and I love them dearly. And I loved the first two movies (the first one more than the second, but I still really liked the second).

And...okay, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, but this movie was not as good as the first two, gotta say.

Spoilers follow under the cuts.

Things I didn't like )

Minor unimportant things that I'm unreasonably bitter about )

Things I liked )

All in all: I enjoyed it! I had fun! I rolled my eyes a lot! I grinned a lot! I cried a little!
