This is the last book in the Temeraire series. The end of an era! I've been following these books for so long and I just have so many FEELINGS.

This is not going to be a coherent review with, like, structure and stuff. Have a list of things I thought about!

- I JUST LOVE EVERYONE IN THIS BAR. BOOK. THING. All the characters are the best and the world is the best and I just. Yes. Good. More of this forever please. (It's so sad that this is the last book!)

cut for spoilers )

- I feel like I ought to say something wrapping up my thoughts about the series in general. I don't even know what to say! I've been following these books for something like a decade, and while the strength of my love came and went somewhat over that time, I've never stopped loving them. In a lot of ways it felt like this series was written to cater directly to my tastes, and though these books are not perfect in every way they are certainly thoroughly excellent at delighting me. I'm gonna miss having new Temeraire to look forward to, and the fandom, though generally enthusiastic, is not what I'd call large and prolific. But I look forward to seeing what writing projects Novik will take on next!

So hey remember how I read Blood of Tyrants and was all "....did I miss a book?" Yes, I missed a book. I missed this one. And I finally got around to reading it! AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY YOU GUYS. These books. They're just....? IDK I AM ENDLESSLY CHARMED AND DELIGHTED.

I read this book almost a week ago at this point and inexplicably did not write down my thoughts immediately after reading. All I did was write a note in my phone of one point I wanted to be particularly sure I remembered to mention. That point: "dragon interpersonal politics are my fave." THEY ARE. Every time I've opened my notes app for the last week I have seen this and been delighted. Dragons interacting with each other with their various agendas and personalities and cultures are the best.

So I FINALLY got around to reading Tongues of Serpents, which meant that I accidentally stayed up till 5:30 am last night. UM. My lack of self-control re: books is awful. BUT IT WAS SO GOOD.

LET ME TELL YOU HOW GOOD IT WAS WITH SPECIFIC DETAILS )

Okay, I'm weak. There is that meme going around with all the titles of one's WIP files, and I am going to do it. Though really I do not have many compared to a lot of people!

Here they are:

-All china_shop's fault
-The Who Wants to Live Forever Affair
-Elizabeth Bennet, Longwing Captain
-Koschei the Deathless fic
-DVD commentary of Love is a Mystery
-Love is a Mystery sequel notes
-Atlantis Adventure Canoeing
-bingo: Doctor/Master

(the fandoms are, in order: WC, MFU, P&P/Temeraire, DW/fairy tales, STXI, STXI, SGA, DW)

Some of these I have already talked about, back in this post, but some of them are new. And there seem to be two varieties of the meme, one of which you can ask and I will give you one line from the fic, and one of which you can ask and I will talk about the fic. I am willing to do either or both, if you have any interest!

As always when I return from vacation (HI! I'M BACK!) my flist/rlist is an intimidating creature. SO MUCH TO READ. This is not helped by the proliferation of Yuletide rec posts! So. Uh. I haven't read a blessed thing in my flist/rlist yet (and I haven't even responded to some comments from before I left on vacation!), but I'm already two days late for posting my end-of-year sum up of the books I've read over the course of the past year. (though four days earlier than I managed it last year!

This was a new year's resolution I made two years ago, and actually succeeded in accomplishing: to record every single book I read. And I liked doing it enough that I did it again, and am going to continue doing it for the foreseeable future.

I know, I know, most people at the end of the year post about the last year's worth of fic they've written or similar fandom-in-review type things. But last year I did that sort of post on my LJ's anniversary, and I simply can't break with a one-year-old tradition, can I? Of course not. (though this year's edition of it will be rather more in-depth, since I've been a much more prolific writer and podficcer! And the year's only half over!)

Anyways, here follows the books I read in 2010, plus commentary thereon )

For part of today's challenge, I am reccing three fics that are not in one of my major fandoms. Since I've got... a lot of fandoms, on a sliding scale of how major they are, this originally posed a bit of a challenge. But I eventually managed to figure out some fics I've loved, the fandoms of which are actually not ones I've read much fic for!

Where I Myself Cannot, by [livejournal.com profile] norah. A Temeraire fic, about Queen Elizabeth and how it was first discovered that Longwings only take female captains. A lovely look at the world, and at the characters.

Cakes and Ale in Fear, by [livejournal.com profile] rexluscus. A Pirates of the Caribbean fic, about Norrington in his younger days, being an ambitious boy but definitely still a boy. I especially love the parrying of Latin quotes.

Green Eggs and Marriage, by [livejournal.com profile] the_neon_one. A Lord Peter Wimsey fic, a retelling of the courtship of Harriet and Peter in the style of Green Eggs and Ham. Adorable and very funny.
