wowww, you clearly had a LOT more exposure to Christian sentimental literature than I did! I just read what was in my church library, which was fairly slim pickings and focused rather more on, like, old order Mennonite and Amish stories. I wish I could remember more of the names of the books I read from the church library! I can picture the covers of a lot of them really clearly but the names escape me....
Pretty much none of the names you mention here except Janette Oke and George MacDonald are familiar with me. And I'd actually never even thought to classify George MacDonald in this category before? Because to me he fits under the category of fairy tales. Buuuut yes you are super right about the christian content in his works.
Also how did I manage to escape Christian YA horse books? I read every single horse book I could get my hands on, WHICH WAS A LOT, and I'm pretty sure NONE of them were Christian, iirc. (I mean, I'm pretty sure some of the characters were incidentally christian in some of them, especially the older ones I inherited from my mom, but the books weren't Christian Literature)
WHEN CALLS THE HEART!!! Yes, I totally read those too! I didn't reread them as often (I think because by the time I got to them I was already getting too old to appreciate Oke's books) but I have fond memories of them as well. I have never seen the movies - I don't tend to watch a lot of visual media - but I just looked up Daniel Sharman as a mountie and I SEE THE APPEAL. You should watch it and report back!
