The Emperor's Soul is SO GOOOOD. Although I should perhaps note that I read it on a day that where I was not in a great mental space so it's quite possible I was not as alert to nuances as I might otherwise have been, and there might be flaws I managed to miss as a result. But it definitely has those things I mentioned!
