The Deccan Traps were a massive volcanic event happening over the course of about a million years in India! This was at an approximately similar time as when the KT boundary is! There used to be proponents of the theory that this volcanism was what caused the massive extinction, not an impact. There were also theories for a while that this volcanism was caused by the Chicxulub impact on the exact opposite side of the planet, but it turns out that because of plate tectonic movements the Deccan Traps were in fact NOT opposite the impact at that time so no the contemporaneous nature is just coincidence.

There's a good argument though that the effects of the Deccan Traps volcanoes did cause some die-out of various species even though they weren't the cause of the massive KT extinction event.

ER SORRY YOU DIDN'T ASK ME TO EXPLAIN THE DECCAN TRAPS BUT I DID ANYWAYS.

that is so awesome that you remember reading an article about the Chicxulub crater from back when it was news!
