Yeah, I feel like my first reread of this trilogy will be very different from my first read primarily because I'll know what to expect in terms of scope. I think I am less pleased with the results scale-wise than you--it feels kind of like an unfulfilled promise to me--but I think I'll enjoy reading it again without constantly expecting the scope to widen up.
I'm totally with you on the pronouns. It would be so nice to exist in a culture where gender just wasn't important. This is my favorite thing about the series, how well it handles gender both explicitly and subtly.
