I had never thought of the thought experiment in As the Last I May Know. I agree that the author did a good job making the character likeable but I found the story overall disturbing. In some ways I think that's a good thing because we have the ability to destroy the earth many times over but we don't (or at least I don't) think on it. This story has brought that to the forefront for me.
