When I read The Dawn of Everything, I enjoyed it as a work of history, but I'll be honest, my main takeaway was, "Look at all these forms of social organization I NEVER see in fantasy novels!!! Maybe people will write stories about these kinds of societies!"
There are things I like about monarchy stories, particularly the kinds of stories that focus on the way dynasties warp a family's dynamics (love that!), but oh my gosh, can't people apply their imaginations to the society aspects of worldbuilding the way they do to magic-systems?
