I just had a moment of "huh, this book sounds awfully familiar..." until I saw the name of the actress Gracie is covering for and a 💡 clicked on, LOL.
Someone had mentioned this book a while ago (and it had sounded kinda fun at the time?) But, just as it became available at my local library, I started to think I would have to deal with points b and c, so I shelved it back.
Aaaaand, yeah, based on what you've said, it sounds like it was the best decision for me.. ESPECIALLY the part abt Gracie and Fangli's connection. Like...no, thank you. I seem to picking up not-so-great books as I just DNF'd Portrait of a Thief (lauded as Ocean's 11 x anti-colonizers?) by Grace D.Li because it read like a lower YA* than a regular adult book.
* Lower in the sense of it being aimed at folks in the 12-14 y.o range.
Anyways, I do like that there are a lot more Asian authors publishing nowadays (vs. a decade ago, frex), so there's that. It's a shame that this book didn't hit the spot.
