that's so fair, reading fics when you don't know the fandom is not for everyone!

Hmmm I think I found these in a variety of ways. Some of them definitely it's "I know and enjoy this author, so I'll try their writing even if I don't know the fandom," some of it's "I'm scrolling through yuletide and the fic looks interesting so why not," some of it's "this appeared on a rec list and the reccer made it sound worth a go," and some of it I genuinely don't remember how on earth I came across them and it seems surprising that I ever did but somehow I clearly did!
