Right? I have SO many feelings about her as surrogate parent and how unfair that is to her but also...what else was she supposed to do?
RIGHT this is like classic parentification problems here. what else was she supposed to do! she loves her brothers!
This is not a thing I'd considered about the way you do fandom-first-then-canon, but of course you would often have trouble knowing what's canon from what's fanon! Fascinating!
it's one of the things I particularly love about my way of doing fandom! you get to do this, like, searching through fanfic and meta for clues to uncover the truth about canon, and it's such a fun puzzle! and then sometimes you get bodily punched by canon with something you REALLY did not expect to be canon!
The first major time I remember having this experience was many years ago in Stargate: Atlantis, where I kept on reading about Rodney McKay's crooked smile, and then I watched the show and was like. WAIT you mean he LITERALLY HAS A CROOKED SMILE. HIS STANDARD SMILE IS LOPSIDED. It was so delightful.
(Btw, I have learned from this post that you can easily read emotions on faces, you just can't always distinguish one face from another. So interesting!)
I wouldn't say easily! I'd say this is hard-won information for me, something I had to work at and learn. And I'm still not always as good at it as I want to be, in irl interactions. But I think this is the autism speaking rather than being at all connected with my faceblindness. (edit: though iirc faceblindness is more common in autistic people so. maybe there is a connection? it doesn't feel connected to me though)
I am shrieking at the idea of you discovering this!
:D LOOK it is an extremely normal thing in fandoms for a canon to Not Get Into an emotionally vital conversation that two characters need to have with each other, and so fandom picks up the slack and writes about it over and over and over and over again. (like with Man from UNCLE tv show canon, post-gurnius affair fics were a dime a dozen, because the one character had to go undercover and torture the other character because of reasons, and it was clearly very bad for both characters, and then afterwards they were still chill with each other as partners and never talked about it again.) And with the sheer quantity of Golden Core Reveal fics out there, I assumed that that's what was happening!
It's tragic in a classic Greek tragedy kind of way.
IT IS aughhhhhhhh
Thank you for sharing all this! I very much enjoyed revisiting the show through you!
yayyyyy I really enjoyed your commentary on my commentary!
