Hey so the fic I wrote for yuletide this year was the following!

One Step (1786 words) by sophia_sol
Fandom: Ella Enchanted - Gail Carson Levine
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Areida & Char & Ella (Ella Enchanted), Char/Ella (Ella Enchanted)
Characters: Areida (Ella Enchanted), Ella of Frell, Prince Charmont

Summary: On Ella and Char's first official state visit to Ayortha after King Jerrold's death and King Char's crowning, I did not expect to see them for more than a brief night's stopover. What would keep them in Amonta, after all, when the politics happen in the capital?

And now that reveals are past, I can also post my book thoughts about this book without revealing what I wrote for yuletide!

Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine

A charming retelling of the fairy tale Cinderella! I read this book a lot as a kid, and I still really like it. The basic premise: Ella was given a gift/curse by a fairy as an infant, and as a result she must be obedient to any direct commands from anyone.

Oh! I suppose I should mention the fics I wrote for yuletide - that was a thing that happened!

My assignment was to write a 12 Dancing Princesses fic, which was great fun. I always love writing fairy tale fic! My recipient articulated various particular themes of interest, all of which were things I could get behind, so I did my best to run with those. The hardest was giving the story a romantic happy ending. Me writing romance! Oh dear. So I gave the main character and her love interest a relationship founded on mutual trust and respect and liking, which I know is not the usual definition of romance but is probably as close as I'm able to come :P It seemed to go over well at any rate!

This is also the longest fic I've written in over four years, which I know isn't exactly impressive for a fic that's less than 3k words long, but it's major for me, and I'm very pleased with myself.

last dance for a ticket home (2665 words) by sophia_sol
Fandom: 12 Dancing Princesses (Fairy Tale), Fairy Tales & Related Fandoms

Relationships: Eldest princess/retired soldier
Additional Tags: Misses Clause Challenge
Summary:

As Helene and her sisters climbed slowly back up the long staircase in the early morning, she tried to summon up the determination and pride she used to feel - but she only felt tired. It had been another long night of dancing, and she could hardly bear to face the thought of doing it all over again the very next night.

I also wrote a treat, which was actually me finally finishing a fic I'd begun like half a year ago (whoops) for Mad Max: Fury Road. I'm pleased with how it turned out in the end!

Fandom: Mad Max Series (Movies)

Characters: Toast the Knowing, Furiosa (Mad Max)
Additional Tags: Misses Clause Challenge, Post-Canon, Hair
Summary:

Furiosa is growing her hair. Toast doesn't know why it feels so strange to look at her and see a soft halo of hair beginning to form about her head. Toast had kept her own hair as short as she dared as a form of minor defiance against Immortan Joe's desires, and surely Furiosa had also constructed her appearance in reaction to the situation. Things have changed; hair can change too.

Nowwww I just have to find the time to read all the other fics in the collection, of which there's an impressive number for such a small fandom. But I have a busy weekend ahead of me. But I want to read the fics! Sigh.

New fic by me! About Bucky's hair, unsurprisingly. I had to write another fic first before I could get to this one, but the other fic is still being fixed of its flaws so I'm posting this first. ENJOY?

This one I wrote pretty much immediately after I read Carmarthen's letter. I was reading through, like "lalala what a good letter" and then all of a sudden one of her prompt suggestions leaped out and attacked my brain. So. I was extremely namf about this one while I was writing it, because wowwww Mercutio is hella intimidating to write, but I'm pleased with how it turned out!

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, outside pov, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary:

The princess reflects.

This was my assigned fic, and I had lots of fun brainstorming a million different things I could write for this one. The great thing about writing fic for fairy tales is that there's pretty much an endless number of places you can go. In the end this is the idea that I felt most drawn to. I'm pleased with how this one turned out too! Although upon finishing it I sat back for a moment and went, "HUH." Because thinking back over the last number of female-character-centric fics I've written, pretty much all of them have been either gen or gen-ish and on the theme of grief or loss of some sort. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT ME that I am drawn to explorations of these themes through the medium of female characters, but there's clearly SOMETHING going on in my subconscious!

---------

And the fics I received! I received two fics as well, a bountiful and delightful harvest.

The City of Carcayona (15496 words) by Gehayi

Summary:

"It's only a story, Xury," said Téo gently.

"I know it is a story, " Xury replied with wounded dignity. "I am fifteen, not five. But do you see why she is so important to us? She never quit. No matter what was flung at her, she kept on. And eventually she won. There are worse stories, Téo. Like the story that sings loudly, 'You are alone, enslaved, helpless and without hope, and thus it shall be forever.' That is a terrible story to believe in."

FIFTEEN THOUSAND WORDS FIXING XURY'S STORY FROM ROBINSON CRUSOE, filled with carefully researched history and people being good to each other and a great deal of hope! Gosh, I was just blown away, and it's so exactly everything I ever wanted about this book and this character.

FIC EXISTS FOR THIS SHORT STORY HOLY CRAP, and this too is everything I could have hoped for! This fic ran with my prompt of a fourth hearing set in the future and does a careful and thoughtful and wonderful job of continuing the themes of the story in an interesting and plausible way. ALSO IT IS A FIC ABOUT DREAMS AND STORIES AND SPACE.

So basically this was an absolutely amazing yuletide, AS ALWAYS. I love yuletide so very much.

Dear DW,

I feel the need to inform you that I wrote a thing. Like ~250 words of space verona boybands in extremely implausible gyms, all the fault of #sparklechat.

I can't NOT tell you because this is, technically speaking, my main blog. So. Here it is. Just for you.

RIGHT I SHOULD POST ABOUT YULETIDE instead of continuing ever farther on my fall into Les Miserables. Being easily distractible is sometimes fun and sometimes problematic....

Anyways! I wrote one fic for yuletide, and that fic was for Sarah Rees' Brennan's excellent short story Queen of Atlantis:

One Cannot Ask Loneliness (1098 words) by sophia_sol
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Queen of Atlantis - Sarah Rees Brennan
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Genia/her husband
Characters: Genia
Summary:

The night before Genia's first sacrifice it rains.

It was fun! If by fun I mean full of me tearing at my hair! This wasn't the story I intended to write -- the story I intended to write was far more epic in scope -- but I'm quite pleased with how this turned out nonetheless: a small and quiet story about who Genia is and why she made the choices she did.

I also received two fics, both for A Girl of the Limberlost, both about Edith, and VERY VERY different from each other!

My main gift was the following, a lovely sweet story that does just what I asked for and gives many warm fuzzies! Thank you, Whetherwoman!

Home Is Where the Hart Is (1090 words) by whetherwoman
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: A Girl of the Limberlost - Gene Stratton-Porter

My other gift was from [personal profile] justice_turtle, who knows me well enough to know that I REALLY DO MEAN IT when I say I'm open to being convinced of other viewpoints -- so he wrote the following as a treat for me, a fic which is pretty much the exact opposite of what I had thought I wanted. HEY GUESS WHAT, turns out JT is really damn convincing and this story is actually ALL OF THE AMAZING AALSDSHFLKDJHFLKSDFJ

A Girl of the Social Round (1246 words) by Justice_Turtle

Characters: Edith Carr, Philip Ammon, Hart Henderson
Summary:

PHILIP AMMON IS A DICK *koff* I mean: An apologia for Edith Carr.

In conclusion: yuletide once again was EXCELLENT. I LOVE YULETIDE SO MUCH. And I mean, there is SO MUCH wonderful fic written for SO MANY glorious tiny fandoms, and it kind of feels like the entire thing is a gift -- one I am very thankful for. I'm not yet done going through all the yuletide fic I'm interested in, alas, and we'll see how far I get THIS year before I get distracted. (It'd be a first if I actually managed to get to all the fic I intend to this year!)

OH HANG ON, I should totally tell you! The remix_redux fics are de-anoned, so I can share with you the fic I wrote!

It is a remix of [livejournal.com profile] prettykitty_aya's fic countdown, and I had a lot of fun doing it. I rather like how it turned out!

When I signed up for remix_redux, I had this idea in my head that I was going to write a depressing story for once, that I would find a cheerful fic and remix it in terms of tone and make it a total downer. Instead I, uh, did the opposite, sort of? Yeah, I have problems writing things that aren't happy endings. :P

Using power tools is a hell of a lot of fun. Especially using an air nailer. Just saying! (also, it's kind of hilarious when an acquaintance of your Dad's drops by and is all astonishment to discover that the person in the basement using the extremely impressive-sounding saw is a daughter. I kind of wanted to get annoyed about gender stereotypes but I was too busy just having fun with the saw. I HAD SUCH POWER.)

Anyways, on to the point of this post, which is that I am once more ensconced in my apartment and everything is back to as normal as it gets, except for the alarming amount of catch-up I have to do around here after my absence. Maaaaybe I'll be pretending that doesn't exist for a while. We'll see.

Actually, the real point of this post is that I WROTE FIC. Plural, actually!

Fic One: my extremely belated Yuletide reveal. I was assigned to write for [livejournal.com profile] pauraque, and was extremely pleased to write a Hark! A Vagrant fic about the Mystery Solving Teens for him. It was a lot of fun and I am pleased with what I wrote, and he seemed to like it, and other people seemed to like it too, so yays all around!

Fandom: Hark! A Vagrant

Fic Two: I wandered over to one of those commentfic fests that pop up on people's journals with some regularity, because it's fun reading the fics that come out of them. And because quite often the prompts act as handy spoilery summaries for the fics that follow, and you know how I feel about spoilers :D

Except at this fest (the Bandom Missed Connections Fest) a prompt blindsided me, and I wrote an entire fic for it in just a few hours during the one free afternoon I had in the last week and a half. I do not usually write fic that fast! IDEK what happened, but possibly it's a sign that I need to get around to posting a rec-set of fic about public transportation, because dude, it's such an awesome trope.

Brendon's never talked to him, but he means to. And then that guy isn't taking the commute anymore."

And now it is time to scare my tabs into submission! They kind of proliferated out of control during the last week and a half when I've been kind of exhausted and not interested in dealing with that sort of thing.

(ooh, I have an icon that is, like, relevant THREE TIMES OVER for this post! Hark! A Vagrant -- check! Musician -- check! Gratuitous references to Canada (...okay, so I set Scenarios in Toronto. Brendon works at the ROM. SO SUE ME) -- check! \o/ Although I wonder if it's one of the icons I have on both DW and LJ...))

Oh my god what is this even. So John Green (aka author of such YA works as Looking For Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines) is also part of a vlogging duo with his brother Hank. And on Hank's Hankgames channel, John Green has been posting videos of him playing some FIFA video game while telling stories about his life among other things, and the characters in his FIFA team have developed more and more personality and backstory as time goes on. And in a recent video it was revealed that two of the players, Bald John Green and Other John Green, have been married for two years and have finally decided to come out. Clearly fanfic needed to exist. Especially since John Green had said in an earlier video that slash fic for them totally already existed, but no matter how hard I googled I could not find it. OKAY. I FIXED THAT.
