Guess what movie I saw tonight?
CAPTAIN AMERICA! OH HEY THAT WAS A GOOD MOVIE OR SOMETHING. I just absolutely loved Steve. He was such a genuinely good guy! Like, actually a good person, not a Nice Guy (TM). So earnest and adorable and -- awww, I love him so much.
Also I love the scientist dude who turned Steve into Captain America, and was Very Put Out when he died. Also I love Bucky, and was Very Put Out when he died. Also I love Peggy and was Very Put Out that she and Steve never got their dance -- at least she got to live a long and full life?
And, hmm, apparently I don't actually have a great deal to say about the movie. But I enjoyed it! And OH WOW I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO AVENGERS. When the trailer didn't get played during trailer time before the movie, I was seriously dismayed, because I'd been promised an Avengers trailer! I'd seen footage of it on youtube and everything! But then it came after the movie and ALL WAS WELL. Here's hoping Avengers is good!
EDIT: OH ALSO throughout the whole movie every time I they said "Hail Hitler" or "Hail Hydra" I assumed they were doing a really crappy job of pronouncing the german word "Heil." It wasn't till the end that I realized that no, they'd just replaced the iconic phrase with the English translation. But it totally threw me every time! "Hail Hitler?" REALLY?

More importantly, WANT TO SEE AVENGERS.

But yes, AVENGERS I CANNOT WAIT. I am ridiculously excited for it, but it's SO FAR AWAYYYYY.

But um... guess what character I have a dozen ficbunnies about? I think I'm pretty predictable.

And actually I have no idea what character you've been inspired by -- do tell!

Oh man, Howard Stark and Edward Teller... Baby Howard Stark and Nikola Tesla. Howard Stark and Senator McCarthy. Howard Stark and Doctor Strangelove. WAAAAANT

And meanwhile Howard Stark gets married in his 50s and has Tony in his 60s and Tony spends his childhood trying to live up to his distant and incredibly accomplished father and to his father's surrogate children. And just when he starts to succeed his father dies. Poor Tony.

But beyond that, I felt like there were so many things they hinted at with Red Skull's motivations and didn't develop. His ideas about himself and Cap rivalling the Gods... that was so much more interesting than what we saw.

(I really don't have much coherent to say. Except THIS IS THE MOVIE I'VE BEEN WANTING FOR SEVEN YEARS, GOOD ON YOU MARVEL. *bouncebounce* I mean, I made a rather long reaction post, but essentially that is what it said...)
I came to it from just about the opposite of your angle - I've been mainlining the old canon for years, so I was all "hello Dr Erskine! hello Bucky! YAY BUCKY HAVING AGENCY AND A PLOT ARC! Hello Dugan and the Howlers! DUGAN AND THE TANK, LOL." (I had no idea how much I wanted "Cap and Bucky and the Howlers: WWII Adventures" until I got it. I want aaaaaall the fic now. Actually I think I want a TV spin-off. *g*)
Also Steve was absolutely perfect. IMO. I'm so chuffed now, because everybody in the fandom will be writing my very favorite version of him EVAR, and I didn't even have to write the screenplay myself. ;DDDD
I am so hoping Avengers will be EXCELLENT, yes.
(You know, I didn't notice the "Hail Hitler" thing at all, but on reflection it makes sense to me. If all the German dudes are speaking German to each other, as seems sensible, and there's just a sort of Universal Translator in the camera making them intelligible to us, it's logical to translate words like "heil" and "herr" along with everything else, instead of leaving them in the original to give it more of a foreign flavor or something.)

It is hard for me to even imagine going into the movie with that much background! Usually when I go see superhero movies, Essie's briefed me beforehand on at least the Important Bits of comics canon, but this one I pretty much went into cold. Anyways, it makes me happy that Cap is apparently appealing both to diehard fans and to ridiculous newbies like me!
And yes, Steve was SO AMAZING.
(the Hail Hitler thing BOTHERED ME TO NO END throughout the entire movie, because I could not hear it as anything but an awful mispronunciation of "Heil". SIGH. It is possible that this is just a problem for me, and I DO see why they did it the way they did, but GAH IT STILL GRATED.)
