last of the movies I watched semi-recently
Watched The Breakfast Club the other day! Since it's one of those movies that's, like, constantly being referenced, because it was totally a thing back in the day. And since I accidentally read a bunch of Brian/Bender Breakfast Club fics a while back and really enjoyed them and kind of wanted to see what the source material was like.
It's really good! I enjoyed it quite a lot, although I kept on having to pause and cringe. EMBARRASSMENT SQUICK I H8 U.
The thing I liked the least about the movie was the "makeover" of Allison at the end. Frankly I liked her usual look better! And the way Andy was suddenly all wide-eyed in -- well -- lust with her once she got a makeover? Not cool. He's supposed to like her for ~who she is~, not because she's learned to fit in with the social norms of femininity! Plus Allison was pretty much just awesome all around. *sigh*
Bender was not at all how I'd pictured him. For some reason I thought of him as small and foxy, not this big intimidating dude. I thought of him as using the force of his anger to be intimidating, not just his sheer physical presence. But it was interesting to watch him. I definitely see why the fics about this movie tend to be about Bender: he's interesting, and captivating, and although there are ways in which he's kind of a horrible person (some of the things he said to the others, I just hated him so much) they're things he can clearly grow out of and learn to be a better person when out of his toxic home life. And since, well, that's what the fics tend to be about...!
