Lunchtime Post the second
Hey, maybe lunchtime posts will become a thing or something! ANYTHING THAT GETS ME POSTING MORE REGULARLY IS GOOD. Today's is drawing from the backlog in my Things To Post doc.
A while back I watched Score: A Hockey Musical, at the recommendation of
kiki_eng, and it was very good! Or possibly just really really good for me personally because of who I am! (there was a lot of overidentifying with the main character while watching this, I WILL NOT LIE.) While watching, I typed out my reactions in a liveblog sort of thing, intending to edit into a proper thoughtful reaction post after finishing. Then I never did. And now it's been months since I saw it, so WHATEVS, HERE, HAVE MY LIVEBLOG, minorly edited to make it make sense.
"What's that all about? There's no need for violence, especially when playing sports!" :D
"You could be the next Sidney Crosby!"
"Cindy who?"
HAHAHAHA that was me before my brief stint in hockey rpf fandom. The only hockey players whose names I knew were: Wayne Gretzky, "Rocket" Richard, and Brodeur (There was a dude in middle school with me who was a big fan of Brodeur, and other people made fun of him for it, hence me knowing the name. I haven't a clue what Brodeur's first name is. Or why liking him was something to laugh at.)
Auuuuuugh, busy way overidentifying with Farley
OH MY GOD THE STYLIZED DANCING/FIGHTING ON THE ICE. DYINGGGG
….the hockey announcer dude from that first game he plays looks SUPER FAMILIAR and I don't know what from! But the credits at the end REVEALED ALL to me. GEORGE STROUMBOULOPOULOS. There we go! (also, awwww, they actually got Wayne Gretzky's dad to play Wayne Gretzky's dad!)
WHY AM I GETTING SO EXCITED SEEING A CITY-BUS IN THIS MOVIE? Because it is in fact exactly as I expect public transportation to look in real life, which means it's really disconcerting seeing it in a movie!
And then it is TORONTO, PLAYING TORONTO, instead of Toronto pretending to be an American city! (!!!)
"It feels kind of unfair that someone has to lose" FARLEYYYYYYY ♥
"And your teammates? Fitting in alright?" AND THEN THAT MONTAGE
Awww, male bonding, becoming PART OF THE TEEEEAM
"I cannot believe there is an entire magazine completely devoted to hockey." That would TOTALLY have been me once upon a time
trying so hard to fit in and do what's expected after a life of being an outsider because it feels so good to be accepted: ALL THE FEELS
yyyeah okay the stereotypes are getting really frustrating. marco the romantic italian dude, that big black fighting hockey player from the first game, etc
Dude, why is Eve so shaky on skates? Seriously, she's grown up in Canada her whole life, and with Farley as a best friend, and that's as good as she can skate? I find that more than a little unbelievable)
I really love the system for talking to each other that Farley and Eve set up between their windows!
Farley's strategy when that goalie comes after him in the fight is Very Sensible but augh he is going to get in TROUBLE for that!
"What's so shameful about not wanting to fight?" EXACTLY. There is no lack of honour in refusing to fight back!
and now they're trying to peer pressure him into fighting as well so that he can KEEP that feeling of belonging he's acquired! FEEEEELS
but also I just LOVE the delightfulness of these super macho hockey players DANCING ABOUT THEIR MACHONESS. It is GREATTTT.
augh augh augh FEEELS he is being teased and rejected and cast out because of him standing up for what he believes in and there is nobody on his side but him sldjfhskdljfslkdjf
"maybe my parents just aren't as cool as I once thought they were"
"they reject anything that has even a whiff of mainstream before they give it a chance! I am sick of being different -- what is wrong with fitting in?"
"anyone can fit in! Being different, now that takes imagination."
"Does it? Or is it a crutch?"
^THE QUESTION THAT HAS PLAGUED MY ENTIRE LIFE: HOW MUCH ACCEPTING/REJECTING MAINSTREAM IS REALLY ME?
Oh noooooooooo! He IS standing up for his ideals and his parents criticise him for not doing it well enough, they're going to make him REJECT THOSE IDEALS that after all they were the ones to teach him. and if he CAN'T do anything right in their eyes why even keep trying?
DAMNIT FARLEY IS WALKING IN ON MARCO AND EVE AT EXACTLY THE WRONG TIME AND HE'S GOING TO COMPLETELY MISINTERPRET! I HATE THIS KIND OF MANUFACTURED MISUNDERSTANDING.
Awwww Farley! Well, at least he realized pretty quickly that giving in to the pressure to fight wasn't him and wasn't right for him.
HIS PARENNNNNNTS ♥ They REALIZE that what they should have done is been a SUPPORT for him so that he didn't have to stand all alone in navigating the difficulties of living by his choices! And they apologize for not having done that!
Okay, so the ending was rather too facile but WHATEVER. EARNEST JOY NONETHELESS. And dude, if hockey actually had a Farley Gordon? I WOULD WATCH HOCKEY.
