Lawrence of Arabia, Act Two
It took me over a week to watch this damn movie but I'M FINALLY DONE! Totally worth it. What a good.
A chronological list of thoughts I had as I watched through Act Two of Lawrence of Arabia:
- okay okay I can do this
- Prince Faisal in the interview is really awesome
- I'm not a fan of this portrayal of Auda abu Tayi being solely motivated by greed, when from what the internet tells me that's not who the historical person was at all
- cue me wailing "NO" at the screen a lot. Also at Lawrence. Just assume this is the state of me for the entirety of Act 2.
- Can we go back to pretty desert vistas and Lawrence being a cheerfully insubordinate weirdo? that was way more fun. THIS IS STRESSFUL.
- I can't quite tell whether this movie is upholding the White Saviour trope, or critiquing it. Or both. Probably both.
- "surely you know the Arabs are a barbarous people, barbarous and cruel. Who but they?" Ali says while GLARING AT LAWRENCE WITH THE HEAT OF A THOUSAND SUNS.
- and then that conversation about hating/loving/fearing lawrence!!!
- Feisal continues to be a very interesting dude
- TOO MANY FEELINGS lskdfhdlkjfsdfl everything is sad forever
Okay okay so in conclusion I don't feel qualified to discuss this movie's opinions on the subject of colonialism and people who aren't white so I'm just going to not even try touching it.
Instead I'm going to talk about how ALI IS SO QUALITY and also LAWRENCE IS SO INTERESTING and also I AM SO SAD ABOUT EVERYTHING. Actually I don't think I have anything more to say on those subjects? I JUST HAD TO REGISTER THOSE OPINIONS.
In actual conclusion: I really want to see this movie on the big screen so that I can a) appreciate the visuals better and b) actually get to experience the pacing as the creators intended.
What a good movie.
(okay also I do have to mention that there are zero speaking parts for women, and I'm pretty sure the only time we saw a woman's face with direct focus was a dead woman. But, you know, war movie set in WWI and made in 60's, what else should I expect.)
