Yuri on Ice

Well this weekend I watched Yuri on Ice! That is definitely a thing. It was a weird experience because I know basically zero about anime conventions so I kept on being mildly baffled by choices it was making without knowing whether my bafflement ought to be directed towards anime as a whole or Yuri on Ice in particular.

I was enjoying myself but not super invested for most of the show. Possibly in part because I was just so confused by everything about Viktor and thinking he made no sense as a coherent character? And then we reached the end of episode 10 and I was like GOSH NEVER MIND I CARE A WHOLE LOT and also OH THERE WE GO THAT EXPLAINS SOME THINGS ABOUT VIKTOR.

Um. I still have no idea really how to talk about this show! It is too many things that I am not experienced with and so I kind of feeling like I'm just ineffectually flailing around the corners of understanding this show? But also I care about everyone (including all the other competitors), and it manages to be a sports anime about like the one and only popular sport that I'm actually interested in watching extended quantities of, and I am nearly positive it is being deliberately textually gay, so like. I am here for it. I will keep watching. AND I WANT THE NEXT EPISODE ASAP.

(I've tried reading the fic but so far it turns out that I am uninterested in pre-ep-10 fic, and also much of the fic I've come across so far is nothing but schmoopy romance which is just....not what I want to read about in extended quantities.)

I have been enjoying YoI all along - while, yes, occasionally laughing at Viktor's apparent OTTness - but it was actually Yurio in the first ep that had me slightly puzzled. There were so many other things going on, though, and being unfamiliar with the style, I kind of forgot about it. THEN EP 10 HAPPENED. From a story telling standpoint I am just so happy. I mean, I also love the story line as my Twitter probably shows, but the particular storytelling elements incorporated that came to fruition in ep 10 are very happy making for me. :)

(Man, that's some hoop jumping to avoid comment spoilers.)
