Thor: Ragnarok
Of late I've been a lot pickier about what mcu movies I actually go to see, because I'm not nearly as enamoured of marvel as I used to be. But OBVIOUSLY I was going to go see the latest Thor, my favourite of the sub-serieses within the franchise.
AND LO IT WAS GREAT. And like, actually a good movie, unlike Thor: The Dark World which I adored despite it...not technically being all that.
I think my favourite thing about Thor: Ragnarok was that it was genuinely hilarious and often ridiculous while also having some pretty serious themes. Why is there this idea that there must always be a dichotomy between being funny and saying important things? That only grimdark things can be taken seriously?
This movie could have Thor accidentally knock himself to the ground with a bouncy ball in the middle of a dramatic speech AND ALSO show things about the evils of colonialism and stuff.
I was constantly laughing out loud throughout this movie, and also this movie ended with the total fiery destruction of a murderous colonial empire that had tried to whitewash its history! Amazing.
Also I loved the characters!! I just endlessly love Thor himself, idek why, and of course Loki is a delight to watch.
And the new character of Valkyrie is the BEST, I love how she's both Extremely Competent and also a character who was introduced by having her fall off a gangplank. And how she's running from her past and drinking to forget, and even after she's convinced to stop running away she's not planning to stop drinking because she is understandably FUCKED UP by what had happened to her.
And Korg!! What a charming weird space revolutionary, he is ALSO the best. I was expecting him to be a one-scene character, but then he kept on coming back and being excellent in every scene. I was so delighted when he showed up at the bifrost and was like, hey random fleeing asgardians, I've got this ship, wanna come with me? Beautifully done, and beautifully set up with the previous scene of him asking Loki to come with him in exactly the same way.
Anyways I don't have anything else to say about this movie at the moment and I've used up my ability to write good endings to things on other stuff this weekend so I'll just end here. IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE AND I LOVED IT THE END.
