Solo: A Star Wars Movie

So I just saw the new star wars and I enjoyed it rather more than I was expecting to? I kept on seeing review saying things like: it was perfectly fine I guess. Which does not inspire one to a lot of confidence.

But although it wasn't perfect it was definitely worthwhile. I have a lot of feelings about Star Wars, turns out? WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED.

I'm not sure what to say about it though. In a number of ways the movie was predictable because you know how things turn out: Han is alive and doing stuff with Chewie, he has the Millennium Falcon, any love interest he might have had before the Original Trilogy is emphatically not in the picture anymore, and Han is rather disillusioned with everything. But in other ways they managed to do some interesting stuff with these required details.

I loved how Qi'ra's storyline turned out, for example. She still obviously cares about Han, but her life has gone in such different directions since she last knew him and she has other stuff on her mind and other plans to make. So I'm honestly kind of delighted that she murders her boss and takes over his place in the crime syndicate leadership. (She doesn't get fridged! She deliberately chooses to leave Han behind for a different life!)

Also the movie might have been predictable in places but I'm not always good at predicting. Like I ABSOLUTELY should have figured out that Beckett was going to double-cross Han. He even warns him early in the movie! COME ON SELF, that reveal should not have been at all a surprise.

Anyway. I loved that the rival smuggler gang was not just a random bunch of criminals but was the seeds of the rebellion. The leader woman was GREAT. (also apparently the actor who plays her is going to be Eponine in the upcoming Les Mis BBC miniseries??? COOL!)

And I continue to adore Chewbacca and be kind of fascinated by the relationship between him and Han.

And it's also just satisfying to be back in the world of star wars but in a movie where I DON'T feel like there was any character assassination. So good job there, Solo.

One thing about this movie I found kind of weird: So I loved that they had a droid who is explicitly interested in equal rights for AI, buuuuut the movie kind of treated her opinions as a joke? And then she dies! And then she sorta-kinda lives again integrated into the Millennium Falcon's systems, where she can never ever ever be free. So like, the writers of this movie clearly CONSIDERED the idea that maybe the way the star wars canon treats droids is kinda creepy and basically slavery, and then....don't seem to actually care about this. WHATEVER.

Overall: good movie, glad I watched it. And now I get to go see what fics are being written!

Yeah I also felt really weird about the AI rights subplot! Like, on the one hand, I'm glad they're at least mentioning it, but on the other hand .... I definitely felt it was played for laughs in a way I wasn't super OK with.
