star trek movies
I'm making progress finally on working through the old Star Trek movies!
I saw Star Trek I years ago. This year so far I've seen II, IV, and V.
II and IV matched the expectations I'd been given about quality and I enjoyed them. Everyone told me to not bother watching V though - and I decided to watch it anyway because I wanted to meet Sybok. And apparently everyone's warnings set my expectations at an appropriate enough level that I actually thought it quite fun!
There are aspects of the movie that make zero sense: like, to what degree is Sybok actually able to brainwash people? At first it seems all-encompassing, because everyone he does his thing to then immediately joins his team, even people we know to be strong-minded and moral. But then he fails at his efforts with both Spock or McCoy, which throws everything in doubt and makes it seem like everyone else must have just been Lesser or something for failing to stand up to Sybok's mental influence. Nnnot great. And this is, like, the major plot point, Sybok's brainwashing thing.
(also there was the weird superfluous sexy fan-dance Uhura does, wtffffff is with that)
WHATEVER, movie accomplished, I enjoyed myself, next up on the Star Trek watch will be another of the movies that people actually generally agree is good.
