The Blue Castle, by Lucy Maud Montgomery

How many times have I read this book? Let's, uh, let's not count.

This time through it really struck me that the book never addresses the chemical experiments that Barney is apparently doing in Bluebeard's chamber????? He's a writer and a hobbyist naturalist, what are his experiments!

Also: Barney's friendship with Cissy! I want to know more! I love how kind a person Barney is, even when he was at his most cynical. Barney's previous life experiences had taught him never to trust other people's love for him, but he still has so much love to show and he does everything he can for Cissy.

And I just....I endlessly love how Barney and Valancy's relationship is portrayed, how much they clearly enjoy each other's company while also being happy to spend time doing their own things. They're wonderful friends, with interests in common, and the ability both to say and do nice things for each other and to set clear boundaries about what they need in a relationship. And they both so clearly blossom in the warmth of their relationship and it's beautiful to watch. God. I just. I love them SO MUCH.

But the number one thing I want for both of them post-canon (okay besides them remembering that THEY LOVE MISTAWIS why would they live there only one season of the year, and coming back to make it their regular home again after a bit of travel!) is for them to both MAKE SOME OTHER FRIENDS. They are both so delighted to finally have someone who likes them, after a dreary lifetime alone, and that's BEAUTIFUL, but now that they're settled in their relationship with each other they could branch out some! Friendships would benefit them both!
