haha yeah my mom taught me basically zero hand sewing, so my knowledge of it began as a preteen who was in a cross stitching club at school and I extrapolated from a combination of that and machine sewing and an attitude of "well let's see what happens if I do x"

but it turns out instead of knotting your thread you're supposed to do a couple backstitches in place and then clip the trailing thread? who knew!!
