three things: wips, craft rooms, fandom rareness

I should at least occasionally share some of my mastodon thoughts over here too, for those of you who aren't on mastodon! my dw is too much just reviews and recs and the occasional fanwork these days. okay, three things make a post:

1.

tfw you keep forgetting which of the wips you're subscribed to you're waiting until they're done to read, and which you're reading as they're published, and so you open and read a chapter of a fic and then realise you haven't read the last 2 chapters

well that would definitely explain why this chapter didn't feel like it led reasonably from where I remember the fic having been left off!! because it WASN'T SUPPOSED TO.

2.

my partner told me recently about seeing someone on Instagram asking what the classic millennial midlife crisis move was going to be because convertibles are out of date and cheating on your spouse is gross, and someone replied to the post with "building a craft room. a room, just for crafts." and like. holy shit. I am living the millennial DREAM. I love my new craft room. I love it so MUCH. I have had it for less than two months and I'm not even done setting it up, and already it feels indispensable

3.

I decided to add a rare fandom tag to my bookmarks on pinboard, so I went through all the fandoms I have bookmarked (MANY HUNDREDS) and it's so funny how much I needed to double-check on ao3 to discover whether or not they're rare fandoms.

me: well I only have one fic bookmarked for this fandom and I know literally nothing about the canon even through osmosis, it's probably rare.

the fandom: has more than 80,000 works on ao3.

Ahhhhh you are living the dream! I want a craft room! (As the kids grow out of toys I am slowly repurposing their toy bins for craft storage, ssh don't tell them) If you ever want to show pics I am HERE for this :D

That craft room desire thing is REAL.

Source: I don't even weave but I keep thinking "maybe if I got a loom"

It takes up space and also for the longest time I was so confused about weaving because how do you change the size once it's started???? how do I modify it???? lol.

But my hands are too messed up for kniting, and less so but still for crochet, and even with a sewing machine that claims it's automatic self threading, I still can't thread it because only the bobbin is automatic and the rest requires precise hand motions where I can't see it and so I cannot do it even though I can thread a needle just fine by myself (very belated relatization: is the placement of these things on the machines meant for righties and that's why I can't manage it with my left????? I should investigate) and so sewing is out and so is quilting unless I want to do it by hand and I'm very unpracticed at that. SO OBVIOUSLY I should take up weaving.

At least this is not a new desire; I downloaded weaving tutorials more than ten years ago onto my computer. Have I started weaving? No.

(I did side-track into maybe trying macrame but got frustrated because I couldn't find anything about how to start and end it, just how to do the middle bits.)

Ah, truly living the dream! Just… a room! A room of one's own that is not of one's own own, but ownish!

Sometimes I feel like I am the only millennial who isn't into crafts, but then... is origami a craft? Uh-oh.

Oh man. [personal profile] sdk and I are currently in the process of determining our list of Needs and Nice-to-Haves for our new place, so the potential for a craft room is probably more real at this moment than it has been or will be at any other time in my life!

The craft room is TOTALLY the millennial version. And much nicer tbh connotations-wise because it doesn't signify "bought myself an expensive thing to leave my family with", it's inside the home.

Mine would be a library. I mean, I live in London so hahaha to that, but maybe my midlife crisis will be moving far away so I can afford a library.
