Re: Librivox, I started recording there because I wanted to record Peter Kropotkin's Memoirs of a Revolutionist, which I also did (all seventeen hours of them!). Besides that, I've also done a little poetry, but then I didn't do anything for quite a few years. And now I'm in a fandom where the canon comes into public domain next year (D K Broster's slashy The Flight of the Heron, written in 1925 and set in the 18th century), so I'm looking forward to that! As a warm-up, I've been recording the fannishly adjacent book Flemington by Violet Jacob (from 1911).
Anyway, I found the Librivox community to be welcoming. It's certainly different from the podfic community--as you say, there are rules you have to follow. But you also get more support in some ways, like, there's a proof-listener who checks for errors and gives you feedback if you want it.
