Jane of Lantern Hill, by Lucy Maud Montgomery
I've always really loved this book, because JANE IS THE AMAZINGEST, so last night when I was feeling unreasonably anxious for no good reason I decided to reread it. Turns out this was a bad life choice because AUNT IRENE EXISTS and her awfulness pervades the whole novel and the Aunt Irene situation doesn't actually get resolved by the end of the book and just... NOOOOOOO. Aunt Irene is a terrible thing to inflict upon a person who is already not in the best mental state. So I finished the book more anxious than when I'd started.
Also: something I noticed rather more this reread than I have in the past is that neither of Jane's parents are actually, like, good parents? She loves them both and gets along well with them both but they're not good parents! Of the three of them JANE is the only really competent human being. And, like, I love Jane and her competence a great deal but she is a child! And really ought to have someone who can be a GOOD PARENT to be her parent.
