Ruth Hall, by Fanny Fern
This is a Victorian novel about a VIRTUOUS but SENSITIVE young woman who endures many trials and tragedies but eventually through goodness and hard work manages to win the day for herself and her family!!!
It is a little too much the sort of thing it is for my tastes, but it is very effective at what it sets out to do. My heartstrings were definitely played upon.
It is interesting though that in this book, despite dating to the Victorian era, the happy ending for Ruth isn't to retire to a solely domestic life. Her happy ending involves her being a famous and well-respected author with no husband. Aww yeah go Ruth.
I am also kind of amused by this being the third historical novel I read in a relatively short time period to in one respect or another have been about being an author to some degree. The excerpts from Ruth's mail in this book remind me a lot of Jo's mail excerpts from Jo's Boys!
