2020 Hugo Award: best artists, fan writers, and dramatic presentations
The Hugo voters packet arrived last night so I've been busy putting together a spreadsheet to organize my thoughts about the various candidates for all the awards, what I do and don't have access to and through where, and my voting decisions for the things I've already read/seen/whatever. Exciting! I love spreadsheets.
Anyway I thought I'd post my thoughts for how I'm planning to vote in a few categories which were quick to get through once I had my lists together.
(then maybe it'll be less intimidating to face down everything else when I have so little time to read it all!)
Best Professional Artist
I would be delighted with any of my top three votes winning in this category, it was hard to rank them!
1. Galen Dara - Amazing use of colours and I love the way the different layers of the images stand out against each other.
2. Alyssa Winans - Some great stuff, there's some works in here I particularly love.
3. Rovina Cai - Really neat and dramatic style.
4. Yuko Shimizu - Not really my thing.
5. John Picacio - Not really my thing.
6. Tommy Arnold - Not really my thing.
Best Fan Artist
1. Iain Clark - I don't love all his works but the stuff I like I really like.
2. Ariela Houseman - I like her stuff, it's nice.
3. Grace P Fong - Some of her works I like more than others, but there's some nice pieces.
4. Sara Felix - Pretty but not my thing.
5. Meg Frank - It's fine. It doesn't speak to me.
6. Elise Matthesen - Her jewellery is clearly well made but it's never spoken to me or, for that matter, actually seemed sff to me.
Best Fan Writer
The folks I've marked as 2, 3, and 4 in this category I'm unconvinced of my ordering on. They're all....fine! They're fine. I have zero strong opinions about any of them. I would not seek out the things they write but don't overall dislike the things they say, of what I've, uh, half-heartedly skimmed. Nothing really caught my eye and drew me into deeper reading for any of them.
1. Bogi Takács - I don't actively follow eir online presence but whenever e has some writing show up on one of the various sff places I do follow, I always read with interest. E generally has worthwhile and interesting things to say.
2. Alasdair Stuart - Fine.
3. Cora Buhlert - Fine.
4. Adam Whitehead - Fine.
5. James David Nicoll - Mehhhhhhhhhh.
6. Paul Weimer - Sincerely mehhhhhhhhhhhh.
Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form
I've only seen three of these and I'm not going to bother watching or voting on the other three. One is a tv series and that's more than I'm capable of watching, one is horror and that's DEFINITELY more than I'm capable of watching, and one is Avengers: Endgame and I already judged when it came out that I have no interest in it.
1. Captain Marvel - Loved it! Link to my review from when I first watched it.
2. Good Omens - Loved all the parts that I didn't have to fast-forward through to avoid tripping my embarrassment squick, which was a lot of it! Link to my review from when I first watched it.
3. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - I have conflicted feelings. Link to my review from when I first watched it.
Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form
Hahahahaha you think I'm actually going to successfully watch TELEVISION? Nope. I'm skipping voting in this category because I am not in any way the relevant audience.
