Anishinaabemowin names for birds

Yesterday I watched this amazing webinar about birds and traditional Indigenous knowledge. There's a team of three guys doing work on recovering the knowledge about the Anishinaabemowin names for birds, which was interrupted or lost due to colonialism; they presented a webinar hosted by the Oak Ridges Moraine land trust in Ontario, and it was RIVETING. I learned so much, both about birds and about Anishinaabe relationships with birds, and the team was so fun to listen to as well! They are clearly friends as well as coworkers, and care deeply about the work they're doing, and it's important work too.

The land I live on is the traditional land of the Anishinaabe, among other people groups, so I particularly appreciated that this is locally relevant to me, but I think it would be interesting to people outside this territory as well. Highly recommended!

The webinar link.

And if you want to know more about the team doing the work, their website is Creator's Garden.

I'm delighted that people are working with the local indigenous language. I'm interested in heritage languages generally and that's one of several I've written about.
