The Immortals Quartet, by Tamora Pierce
I need to get on posting all my book thoughts if I’m to have all my 2016 books posted within a reasonable time frame after 2016! At any rate here’s four more books at once:
The Immortals Quartet
I do like these books a lot but not as much as some of Tamora Pierce's other works. The first two books are better than the second two, in my opinion.
I like how in Wolf Speaker there's a lot of themes around the (lack of) connection between appearance and morality, which is good stuff. And Wild Magic is just a charming introduction to Daine.
But In Emperor Mage the author's trying to do things with race and empire that don't quite work, imo. (re: race, see for example the Banjiku, who fit the "Magical Negro" trope a little too well for comfort. And also they have to be told by a white person that their god didn't intend them to be slaves, which really makes me wince.) And in Realms of the Gods I just spent a lot of the book bored. Plus creeped out by the romance between 16 year old Daine and her 30 year old teacher, ughhhh. That did not seem creepy when I was a teenager but with adult eyes it TOTALLY IS. Tamora Pierce WHY.

no subject
(I still have very fond memories of the ink-blobs, though.)

(the ink blobs are one of my fave parts of that book, actually!)
