The Worst Best Man, by Mia Sosa
May. 25th, 2020 04:40 pmLina's fiance dumped her on their wedding day. Max was the groom's brother who broke the news to Lina! A few years later, Lina works as a wedding planner and Max does marketing, and they have to team up on an extended work-related project while keeping it secret that they know each other.
There were a lot of things I liked about this book - I really liked how grounded Lina was in her family and heritage, and how important that was to her. And I loved how clear the book was that Lina is good at her job and likes it, and doesn't need to change the kind of person she is at work to make other people happy. I also loved Dean and Max's friendship! Dean seems like quite a character and I want to know more about him.
But there were a few too many plot contrivances for me, what with the initial pretense that they don't know each other, followed by the weekend-long pretense that they're a couple, followed by various coincidences that cause extra drama. It's a lot for one book!
There's also a lot of content involving characters talking about their emotions at length to each other, which tends to make me cringe away from the page. NOOO. EXPLICIT EMOTIONAL HONESTY. That's way too intimate, get me out of there!
I also must admit that this particular flavour of enemies-to-lovers is not my personal jam, and I didn't enjoy spending so long watching them be so petty and reactionary towards each other. It's not really that they know and hate each other, it's that they each have like....an idea of who the other person is based on the role they played in each other's life and can't get over that, added to the fact that they're both really good at hitting each other's buttons. I'd be more into enemies to lovers if they had good personal reasons to hate each other because they know each other so well, but that's not what's going on here.
But the book does go on to make it clear how well suited Max and Lina are to each other, despite their inauspicious beginning, which I appreciate. It's about more than just being hot for each other, the two of them also work well together as people.
Overall, this book may not be exactly for me, but it's very good at doing the things it's doing, so if the things I discuss above aren't dealbreakers for you then I'd recommend this one! Especially as the ebook is currently on sale for $2.
