I find Eva Ibbotson to generally be a SUPER CHARMNG writer. Imperfect, of course, but certain aspects of her id really jive with mine.

However! ( mild spoilers for the book )

HAHAHA OH VIDOCQ WHAT. <-- my reaction to nearly everything that happened in this book.

What I read was an abridgement, alas, as it was the only version my library had, so I don't know how it compares to the actuality of the full memoirs. But the version I read went like so. ( Cut for spoilers. )

I picked this book up because I heard it belongs to the regrettably-rare BOOKS WRITTEN IN THE PAST ABOUT QUEER PEOPLE WHO GET HAPPY ENDINGS!!!!! category. Which is a pretty excellent category which I am ALWAYS happy to learn of further books to add to!
