yuletide recs 2014
Dec. 30th, 2014 09:25 pmGO ME I have read through everything in yuletide I want to, I think? Oh, I probably missed stuff, inevitable in that quantity of fic to sort through, but hey, I will enjoy my accomplishment nonetheless. And now I bring you recs of my top nine fics other than the one that was given to me! In no particular order.

Fandom: Turn of the Story - Sarah Rees Brennan
Author's summary: "Luke and Elliot sort out their relationship (with some interruptions from unexpected monsters, travel between worlds, and post-camp career planning angst)."
My notes: SO GOOD. Idk, I don't think I followed all the actual plot stuff, but the feel was perfect and the characterization choices were spot on and there were lots of delightful details.

Wish You Were Here!
Fandom: I Want To Go Home! - Gordon Korman
Author's summary: Mike Webster had already been dreading a return to Camp Algonkian as the oldest camper, but his new counsellor seemed determined to make Mike's summer even worse.
My notes: I AM SO HAPPY ABOUT EVERYTHINGGGG. (the new counsellor: RUDY, obviously.) I am definitely a fan of how the author chose to portray rather older versions of Mike and Rudy. Rudy's a tough nut to crack when it comes to writing him as a believably human person but I like this author's choices.

Where The Streets Have My Name
Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Author's summary: It was midnight, and Samuel Vimes, Commander of the City Watch, was not comfortable on the Chalk.
My notes: utterly perfect and delightful. SORRY APPARENTLY ALL MY FAVE FICS ARE ABOUT CHARACTERIZATION but I really like how the characters of Tiffany and Vimes are shown here, what a great fic, what a great everything.

Unmoored
Fandom: Chrestomanci - Diana Wynne Jones
Author's summary: He had always thought he would end up married to his work. He had studied hard, worked diligently, brought himself to the attention of the right people--and ended up with an appointment to the Chrestomanci’s personal staff, as high as one could rise in Flavian’s chosen profession if one hadn’t happened to be born with nine lives. And when he got there he’d found Mordecai waiting for him. Mordecai, who threw all his previous ideas into confusion.
My notes: AUUUUUUGH OVERCOME WITH FEELINGS. Yep, I think that covers it.
*
Playing Titania in Tim Hortons
Fandoms: Slings & Arrows, Scott Pilgrim
Author's summary: Or: five projects that Knives Chau regretted letting Darren Nichols talk her into.
My notes: in which the author makes full use of the fact that the same actor plays Darren Nichols and a director dude in Scott Pilgrim. And HOW IS THIS SO GOOD, HOW DOES IT WORK SO WELL
*
A Disambiguation of Elaines
Fandom: Arthurian legends
Author's summary: There are too many Elaines in the lab.
My notes: holy crap I am SO INTO THIS FIC. In which all the proliferation of Elaines in the arthurian legends are part of the same clone family! WHAT A GOOD.
*
Two Monks Invent Mr. Darcy
Fandoms: Two Monks Inventing Things (The Toast), Pride & Prejudice - Jane Austen
Author's summary:Two Monks learn about Mr. Darcy by studying a variety of artistic interpretations.
My notes: idek, this is just a perfect straight-faced piece of ridiculous
*
Fair Winds and Homeward Sail
Fandom: Persuasion - Jane Austen
Author's summary: Sophia Wentworth was devoted to her brothers before she found happiness. Then she wanted the same for Frederick . . .
My notes: THIS IS SO GOOOOOOD. The story of the Crofts, and Sophia and the Admiral are just A+, gosh I love all the characters in here, and also note well THIS IS A NOVEL-LENGTH FIC.
*
Charioteer
Fandom: Queen's Thief - Megan Whalen Turner
Author's summary: Captured in battle and stuck in the Mede capital, Costis has given up all hope of seeing his country again. But Eugenides has a habit of turning up where he's least expected.
My notes: I spent the entire fic cackling with glee over how perfect the characterization is. Eugenides is so EUGENIDES, and Costis so Costis, and the hijinks and daring plans are amazing, and everything is perfect forever.
