it's wild to think how much of the span of my life I've been an internet/fandom person, in all the different ways I've done so over the years. I think I'm up to 24 years since I first got an account on a fannish forum!

something I would never ever have expected of myself from the first, like.....30+ years of my life. is that I'm enjoying finding ways of incorporating the colour pink into my wardrobe.

certain shades, and in certain ways -- it can really fit into the type of vibe I'm aiming for these days! I always avoided it when I was younger, and strongly disliked it as a child, because it was a "girly" colour and as a closeted-to-myself nonbinary person I was basically allergic to things that would make people see me as a standard-issue girl.

but there are ways to incorporate pink into outfits that don't make it read as "girl" but as "gay" and you know what. that's GREAT actually, it turns out!

bakkhai as translated by anne carson is SO MUCH FUN to put on in zoom theatre, highly recommend the experience

huh the master of demon gorge podcast episode about the chronicles of the eastern zhou kingdoms started with a history of the fiction genre in chinese, which is interesting to me because it comes quite directly out of a tradition of people writing down the stories they hear told in marketplaces and other informal contexts - which is to say, a tradition of folklorists. called the "school of small talk", and small talk is, I gather, still how novels are referred to today!

hello melding of my ur-special interest in folklore with my current interest in cnovels!!

this year's AOS announcement about bird species in north america has been released, and there's some big news! the common and hoary redpolls have been lumped into a single species! (along with the lesser redpoll)

from the various reading about redpolls I've done, I think this is a very good move, and I'm glad to see it's backed up with genetic analysis as well.

some of the other changes are very interesting too, but for me personally the redpoll news is the most exciting!

1 multifandom vid rec

The Queer Gospel [Fanvid], by Tafadhali

➤ third in a series of vids Tafadhali made about depictions of queerness in hollywood; I recced the other two last fall, about pre-code and full-code eras

➤ this one is about the 90's and early 2000's

➤ which are all movies that came out within my lifetime so watching this hits in a different way than the other two vids! I definitely got emotional watching this vid

➤ the vid is celebrating the drag queens and gnc characters, and it's so perfectly put together, what a good vid <3

➤ 3:23 in length. audio is song only, no added sounds/dialogue. no subtitles.

2 svsss fic recs

These Wounds, by raitala

➤ hello I am murdered by how on point this fic is, it's perfect and I adore it

➤ svsss au qijiu fic from og!sqq's pov

➤ (trans sqq, for those to whom that's enticement!)

➤ no lbh or transmigration, so the complex relationships between the various peak lords keep marinating over decades

➤ I love how the vibes are so much older, more grounded and more ground down at the same time. and still sqq and yqy are full of all their Problems

➤ I loved the evolving beliefs sqq had about what must have happened to fill yqy with endless guilt towards him!

➤ and the ways sqq treats yqy, before and after the reveals...how things do & don't change

➤ and the beautiful physicality the narrative has in details like the tea, and the hair, and how both yqy & sqq use clothing to hide things about their bodies they don't want noticed

➤ and of course the sharply perceived characterisation!

➤ LOVED IT

FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: On My Time as a Student Under Shen Qingqiu, by by Margo_Kim

➤ cackling with delighted laughter over this svsss bingqiu modern au

➤ these complete weirdos!!! (affectionate)

➤ lbh, a former student of sqq who has since become an international superstar, sends a mass email announcing his interest in sqq. sqq is more worried about his old student's feelings being hurt than he is about the evident stalking the email reveals

➤ the fic is so funny, with so many perfect details. and the last line!!! I'm dead.

1 tgcf fic rec

Who Are You Wearing? by nerdyjellyfish

➤ omg I am LIVING, someone wrote me so many words of ling wen fic wherein post-canon ling wen bodyswaps with xie lian

➤ the ling wen pov in this fic is sooooo good, her pragmatic approach to dealing with whatever happens in her life, her disinterest in attending to her emotions, her independence and unwillingness to rely on anyone who isn't her

➤ and seeing xie lian and hua cheng through ling wen's eyes is so good too!!

➤ there are so many fun character relationship dynamics, connected with a really fun premise, and I loved it all

1 Yuri on Ice fic rec

Recomposed, by rainbowninja167

➤ a Viktor/Yuuri Yuri on Ice fic that's retelling the story of Persuasion

➤ but, and this is key, with the genius idea of casting viktor in the role of anne, and yuuri in the role of capt wentworth

➤ and hot damn the fic takes this premise and runs with it beautifully

➤ I was kicking my feet with delight regularly as I read!

➤ excellent characterisation and fun alterations from canon

1 star trek tos fic rec

DESK JOBS, by WerewolvesAreReal

➤ very funny star trek tos fic about admiral kirk, and spock deciding "fuck it all" and leaving starfleet to become kirk's secretary

➤ tbh I think these two tags on the fic capture everything you need to know: Kirk thinks Spock is having some sort of identity crisis, Spock already had the crisis and he's just embraced his slut phase

➤ kirk is so bewildered and spock is so serenely confident in everything he's doing and it's amazing to watch

➤ also there's a plot about ship sabotage and klingon ambassadors and stuff

1 poetry rec

A Tour of the Blue Palace, by Bree Wernicke

➤ a scifi poem with a fun voice, the pov of a tour guide trying brightly to maintain the official story that nothing's wrong

➤ 500 words in length

2 original novelette recs

The Speech That God Understands, by Jonathan Edelstein

➤ historical fantasy novelette set in a muslim kingdom on the iberian peninsula in the 12th century, with a jewish scholar as the viewpoint character

➤ I love the setting, richly full of a wide variety of types of people and languages and religions, with universities and scientific progress and people doing magic, all interacting with each other

➤ the mystery at the heart of the story is that someone is stealing people's languages of study, on purpose, leaving behind only whatever their first language was. why, and how? and is it reversible?

➤ it's about people's relationships with language and with knowledge and with the world. it's great!

Signs of Life, by Sarah Pinsker

➤ fantasy novelette about family, and two sisters trying to reconnect after many years of estrangement

➤ a quiet and contemplative sort of vibe

➤ the slow reveals were effective

➤ I'm not quite sure about the pacing/vibe of the ending, but overall still a thoroughly interesting and enjoyable story
