A Conspiracy of Kings, by Megan Whalen Turner

So I finished reading A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner on Friday night and haven't posted about it yet because I keep on NOT BEING SURE WHAT TO SAY.

So here's the thing, I read The Thief and was like, pretty good book, but nothing special. And then I read The Queen of Attolia and I was like REALLY EXCELLENT BOOK minus a couple quibbles, and then I read The King of Attolia and I was like PERFECT BOOK????? (my thoughts about the three from when I read them last September)

So it was really hard not going into A Conspiracy of Kings expecting it to be EVEN BETTER THAN PERFECT because Megan Whalen Turner had been doing an amazing job of leveling up after every book. And then I read this book and it WASN'T better than The King of Attolia, and in fact I didn't like it nearly so well, and that was really disappointing!

But the thing is, unlike The Queen of Attolia and The Thief where I could easily point out where my frustrations were, with this one I have NO IDEA how to even begin. It's largely a very good book and I DO like it! It's just........AUGH. WORDS ARE NOT WORDING WELL FOR ME. MY THOUGHTS ARE INCOHERENT. I give up. Those of you who have read this book, please talk to me about your opinions so I can try to get a handle on mine!

My book problem, let me show you it

Today I decided to count how many books I own, and how many of those I've read. Look, I went to a massive used book sale yesterday morning and walked out with a box of 25 books for about $5, and I started laughing to myself about my book problem.

So let me outline my book problem to you.

Note: all of these numbers may be slightly off due to a) human counting error, b) forgetting I've loaned books to people, and/or c) not noticing a pile of books sitting somewhere

I own:
- 556 books.

Of these:
- I have read 384 books (or 69%)
- I have not read 155 books (or 28%)
- I haven't a clue if I've read 17 books (or 3%).

Some of them are books I will never read all the way through (eg the hymnals, the dictionaries, and so forth) but even discounting those THAT IS A LOT OF BOOKS I OWN THAT I HAVE NOT YET READ. Like, that is multiple years' worth of books! At the rate I purchase books I think I am only going to keep falling further and further behind, especially considering that plenty of the books I read are borrowed from friends/family/the library and are not from my collection. And also that I reread a lot.

And the worst (best?) part is that I ONLY WANT MORE. It's just too bad my apartment is too small to consider adding another bookcase, because I am running out of room on my shelves.....

SLINGS & ARROWS HOW ARE YOU SO GOOD

Look I all I intended to do was give a listen to the Season 1 theme song because it's super great, and then all of a sudden it's hours and hours later and I've rewatched the ENTIRE FIRST SEASON and am curled up on my couch overwhelmed with feels. (And I have the theme stuck in my head.)

UGH I JUST CANNOT EVEN WITH THIS SHOW. And the worst part is I've never even watched more than about half of it? Even though the entirety of the show is only 18 episodes. I'm just so bad at watching TV! And Richard's, like, existence stresses me out so terribly much! BUT IT'S ALL SO BRILLIANT.
