➤ an mdzs wangxian modern au set during the early days of the pandemic in 2020, with flashbacks to 2003

As a stranger give him welcome, by morethanfantasy

➜ yuletide fic - for Hamlet

➜ taking an interpretation that Horatio and Hamlet barely knew each other before the start of the play, and running with it from Horatio's pov

➜ I love the way this interpretation shapes the story!

➜ And Horatio's pov is so good. the way he feels helplessly drawn into the mess by Hamlet's charisma, never sure what he can do or what he should do, but unable to make himself step back and leave Hamlet alone

➜ because Hamlet IS so charismatic, and so visibly struggling at the same time! and there's so much depth there that Horatio simply cannot have the context to understand, but he wants to, he wants to be there for Hamlet

➜ but in the end, of course, all he can do is tell everyone what happened.

➜ I'm so emotions!!!!

➜ yuletide fic - for Mairelon the Magician

➜ set mid-canon, a conversation between Mairelon and his mother about the realities of Kim being out in society and the male attention she'll attract

➜ Mairelon's oblivious focus on Kim's magical education and inability to follow where his mother is going with this line of questioning is so fun and so him

➜ what a cute and fun fic!

➜ 1k words in length

If our two loves be one, by phoenixflight

➜ yuletide fic - for the Lord Peter Wimsey books

➜ Harriet's POV on v-shaped polyamory negotiations, Harriet/Peter and Peter/Bunter

➜ the voice is so well done, of Harriet's whole pov but also every line of Peter's dialogue is dripping with the exact right kind of piffle he likes to talk, with all the casual references and so forth

➜ and the way they work out the relationship dynamics between the three of them, what is and isn't said, and what each of them is looking for, feels so right too!

The First Morning, by genarti

➜ yuletide fic, for A Little Princess

➜ Becky's pov on the day after all the climactic reveals, when she gets to leave Miss Minchin's and go join Sara next door

➜ this does such a good job of capturing the tone of the book, the magic and wonder and the depths of emotions, and the kind of relationship Sara and Becky have

➜ these two young edwardian-era girls doing their best to navigate what they can be to each other within the bounds of societal understandings of power differentials, and their own internalized senses of such things.....I'm so emotions!!

➜ 3k words in length

Jeeves and the Birdcatcher's Costume, by WyvernQuill

➜ yuletide fic, for Jeeves & Wooster

➜ in which Jeeves and Wooster separately attend a masquerade ball, each in costume

➜ hidden identity shenanigans are such fun and this one is great!

➜ and the vision of Jeeves at a party flirting with a flighty young master of unknown identity.....so good

➜ 11k words in length

Katharina Stellans, by yvain

➜ a yuletide fic, for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

➜ About the tudor-era magician Martin Pale and his relationship with his tutor, Catherine of Winchester, from the golden age of magic

➜ gosh wow I am just -- so blown away by this?! it feels like it fits so perfectly into the interstices of canon. The undeniable weight of reality that the whole piece has, even as it is shot through with shards of the numinous....the characters all being people who are difficult, and real, and not altogether pleasant, but you love them for how real they are.

➜ Pale and Catherine are so different from each other, yet so connected, and though we get to hear much of Pale's life, Catherine remains as mysterious to us as she is to Pale. And yet we know her from who she is.

➜ idk, idk, I'm not sure how to explain this better! I just....really recommend reading this fic. it is so satisfying.

Black Silk, Brown Silk: China and Beyond—Traditional Practice Meets Fashion, by Abby Lillethun, 2008

just read this interesting article on a technique for dyeing silk fabric a black colour in southeastern Asia, which can be called gummed silk or mud-treated/mud-dyed/mud-coated silk or a variety of other names

The article is about the socio-cultural context of the fabric's use in the last century and a half, which is fascinating, but now I want to know more about the chemistry of what goes on in this dyeing process. Especially since this is a process that involves iron in creating the black colour, and my understanding is that iron-rich dyes tend to corrode fabric over time, but gummed silk is specifically noted as being durable!

TELL ME MORE, INTERNET!

(the internet only wants to provide me fluff pieces about chinese fashion when I try searching)
anyway the article is worth reading in itself even if it doesn't do everything I want it to!

Blue to black: Hypotheses on plant use complexity in traditional dyeing processes in Southeast Asia and China, by S. Li, A.B. Cunningham, Y. Shi, Z. Qiu, A. Hartl, X. Ding, S. Wu, Y. Wang.

I just read this paper on traditional indigo dyeing methods in Southeast Asia & China and it's so INTERESTING.

- did you know: humans have been dying textiles with indigo dyes for at LEAST 6,000 years? despite it being a very complex multi-stage process? I am so impressed. (I'm also impressed we manage to have evidence of this! archeological research into the history of fibre arts is always a trial, for obvious reasons)

- an indigo dye vat needs to be an alkaline environment that has been fermented to grow anaerobic bacteria

- the dye vat will need various ingredients included to promote the fermentation and the correct type of bacterial growth, as well as to create the alkaline environment, and is monitored and maintained over time to make sure it goes right

- the reason you need all this is because indigo particles don't actually penetrate the fibres; you need to reduce the size of the indigo particles, and when they're small enough you can turn them into leuco-indigo which CAN penetrate the fibres. then when the material you're dyeing is exposed to air, the leuco-indigo turns back into indigo and is trapped in the fibres!

- if you want to overdye the indigo to create black, you also need a source of tannins as well as hyperaccumulator plants to be a source of metal mordant

- so if you have indigo you can dye fabric black without using iron! iron corrodes fabric over time, and is the other main way to create a black dye, so this is amazing

- modern industrial indigo-dyeing uses toxic reducing agents instead of the fermented dye bath, and this paper is intended to provide information on how sustainable dyeing could be done in a modern context as well. which, rock on. I love this.

Mickey, Disney, and the Public Domain: a 95-year Love Triangle, by Jennifer Jenkins

really enjoyed this article about Mickey Mouse and what it means practically speaking for Steamboat Willie to join the public domain in 2024!

Ming Yi's Monologue, by Zdenka

- The original Ming Yi doesn't get much attention in fanworks, perhaps understandably since he never appears on-screen in tgcf while alive (or as a ghost, or otherwise able to exist and communicate), but he's a fascinating character to speculate about through what we know of him!

- This short work is from Ming Yi's pov, a poem addressed to He Xuan from after death

- it's so much fun! I love the pov, and I love the air of menace and resentment from ming yi towards his usurper. Perfect ending.

For the Love of Quilting, by Scrippio

- a super cute modern au where wangxian are quilters! I love how much the author is clearly familiar with quilting and is able to imbue the fic with insider perspectives on the art/hobby

- I love when writers port "these characters are super skilled at The Thing The Show Is About" into a completely different domain like this, especially when it's a domain that doesn't get much attention from fandom usually!

- the dynamics between wwx and lwj are also so fun, the way they click so easily, and push each other, and inspire each other, and love each other

- also I dearly want to see all the quilts that are described in the fic lol

The Duke's Curse, by Ghostinthehouse

- Tortall fic set in the Alanna era, about the ways different parts of the country deal with the famine, in the year after the use of the dominion jewel

- I liked the realistic look at what the differences would be in how hard the famine is depending on the main sources of food, eg in Pirate's Swoop which can look to the sea, vs Trebond with its field crops, and the people who have to go hungry vs the people who merely have to eat less deliciously than usual.

- I would have loved the inclusion as well of a place where the people in charge don't care as much about the well-being of the commoners through the famine, but I understand why the fic didn't want to go there!

oh right! the other thing to post about yuletide is that I wrote a fic for yuletide! This year I had the great luck to be assigned to write for the fandom that I am perhaps MOST qualified to write: The Blue Castle, a book that I have reread endlessly to the point where I have thoughtfully considered just about every possible aspect of the narrative, and know all sorts of little details in it by heart.

I ended up deciding to write a fic set post-canon, exploring what their decision to live part-time in Montreal would look like, and I dove whole-heartedly into researching the Montreal of the late 1920's so I could depict it as accurately as possible. I also worked hard to shoehorn absolutely as much nature description into the narrative as I possibly could, and was pleased to fit in some things I feel strongly about (LET VALANCY HAVE FEMALE FRIENDS WHO STAY ALIVE). I'm very proud of the fic that resulted!

For yuletide this year my author did the SWEETEST thing and got their hands on a copy of the out of print children's book I've been wanting fic for for.....decades possibly, and I finally got my fic about Beth! now I just want more fic about Beth lol.

Anyway I have finished going through the entire yuletide archive, reading every single fic that caught my attention! AWW YEAH I continue to win at Completing Yuletide. As always I'm sure there are fics I might have loved that I accidentally missed, but I am proud of my accomplishments nonetheless. And now, before the anon period is over, my recs of the 10 fics I liked the best, in 10 different fandoms!

you could cut ties with all the lies (that you've been living in)
Nirvana in Fire, Lin Chen/Xiao Jingyan

The one where Lin Chen goes to the capital under the name Mei Changsu to enact MCS's plans on his behalf, so tht MCS could rest and recuperate! Genius premise, enacted with perfection, and it's also 26k long and yet I spent basically the ENTIRE THING screaming silently to myself in my head because everything was so incredible and perfect and delightful. Holy shit.

my wife doesn't know I hench, the evil sex ray made my employees do it, and more
Hench/Ask a Manager crossover, Alison Green

Once upon a time I spent a LOT of time following the Ask A Manager blog closely, and this fic is a PERFECT pastiche of the style, with spot-on advice, in a hypothetical post themed on questions from henches working for supervillains. Incredible!

The Soul Selects Her Own Society
Jane Eyre, Jane & Helen

In which Helen's spirit continues to follow Jane and protect her, after Helen's death. And Bertha can see ghosts! I loved it.

bury me as it pleases you
Hamlet, Hamlet/Horatio

A short look at Horation's pov. The prose and use of language and wit felt just right, and Horatio's adoration too!

Paris, in some unknown region of space
Petit-Cénacle RPF/Star Trek crossover, Théophile Gautier/James Kirk

It's the one that ships Gautier with Kirk, and like, does its VERY best with that premise. The sheer French Romanticism of it all! Gautier is so unphased by everything, and is just here to be delighted by it all! What a brilliant thing to exist in this world. No idea how this would read to someone who doesn't know about Gautier and French Romanticism, but one of my mutuals on tumblr loves Gautier so I am part of the correct audience :D

The Scarlet Cloak
The Eagle of the Ninth, Cottia/Esca/Marcus

Post-canon, and ahhhhh and the complexities of the relationships between the three of them as they navigate making a household together despite the huge gaps in their understandings of each other is SO good!!!!

Heuristic Analysis
The Murderbot Diaries, Three

It's about Three working hard to figure out how to make decisions as an independent person, and what it wants, and doing a great job of it! and I love the ending! What a good.

Addendum
Homeward Bounders, Vanessa Macready & Joris & Helen Haras-Uquara (& Jamie by absence)

Three letters to Jamie left on various worlds by his friends for him to come across. Each letter has the PERFECT voice for the character in question, and each world is also a stealth crossover (I knew two of the three and they were amazing, but you don't need to know the crossovers to appreciate the fic!). And I love the implications towards trying to find a fixit for Jamie as well!

Time Enough
Vorkosigan Saga (Ethan of Athos), Cee/Ethan

A lengthy and in-depth look at what it's like to live on Athos, and the depth of cultural knowledge you need to know when moving there from galactic space, as Cee and Ethan work out their relationship with each other. I loved the worldbuilding and I loved the growing trust and intimacy between the two of them and the very understandable issues that they need to learn to talk about!

The Rose Realizes she is an Instrument of War
Arm Joe/Les Miserables, Cosette/Marius

An absolutely incredible mashup of the conceit of the fighting game Arm Joe with the story of Les Mis, it's perfectly integrated in a wonderfully Hugolian way, the worldbuilding is AMAZING and I love Cosette and her experiments with her power. A perfect fic????

(and two runners-up, because if the Lin Chen fic hadn't existed, there are TWO other NiF fics that could have made the cut for top 10: wish we could turn back time ft lin shu/mei changsu in a possibly-a-dream, possibly-time-travel scenario, and From Moth Back Into Caterpillar, ft mei changsu becoming an amnesiac lin shu for a day.)

Dear yuletide author,

I can't believe that the last time I fully participated in yuletide was in 2017. Life just kind of kept getting in the way there! But I am BACK!! And so pumped to get a fic from you in any of these fandoms.

Edit: looks like according to the yuletide mods, this year you're supposed to specify whether you want treats or not, so for the record, I love treats!

My Cousin Rachel, by Daphne du Maurier

Requested character: Rachel Ashley

I read this book for the first time this year and it sent me feral for a week straight; I could not stop thinking about it, I wanted to talk about it with anyone I could pin down, I wrote a 2,000 word review of it because I had so many thoughts to get out. (you can read all my thoughts here if you're interested!)

What I want most of anything for this fandom is fic about RACHEL. I don't know more specifically than that what I want, but her perspective on things is so systematically hidden from the reader behind Philip's POV, and I want to know more! Or maybe I want to be teased more about hidden information? :P A five things fic could be really fun for this fandom, with five different versions of Rachel POV on what might be going on from her perspective! Or five different OTHER outside POV's other than Philip's! I don't know, you're the boss, I just want more of SOMETHING so that I can go feral some more about this book. Because! This book!!!

Just Plain Maggie, by Lorraine Beim

Requested character: Beth Morgan

It's an out-of-print 1950's children's book about summer camp, and if you happen to be familiar with it too then my year is already MADE. I loved this book as a kid! It's interested in FRIENDSHIP and the OUTDOORS and CANOEING and it's great! I have so much fondness and nostalgia for it! And I particularly love that it's a children's book that actually does contain engaged and helpful adults, while still also leaving room for the children to make their own decisions and experience growth.

(It's also, unfortunately, a book that contains an entire chapter dedicated to nothing but the reproduction of harmful Indigenous stereotypes. Let's cut that chapter out of the book.)

The titular Maggie is of course the main character, and I love her a lot, but of the girls in Maggie's cabin, Beth is the one who fascinates me the most. She starts out as an antagonist, but her own struggles are eventually revealed. And it becomes clear that her behaviour comes out of a very understandable reaction to the terrible parenting she's receiving, as a kid from whom all affection is withheld unless she manages to be The Best at everything. It messes her up! But then Beth tries her hardest to learn new patterns of behaviour, even though it doesn't come naturally or easily to her!

So I'd love love love to read more about Beth, whether directly after the events of the book when she goes home and leaves behind the supportive environment of her cabin, or next summer at camp, or when she grows up, or whatever! Let her continue to be complex, and continue to struggle, but I want happiness for her so much! (and I'd definitely be open to shipping Beth/Maggie if you're interested :D)

Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus, by Orson Scott Card

Requested character: none

So like, okay. The very premise of this book is racist, and then there's all those other racist/misogynistic/ableist/christian-primacy takes in the book as well. It's bad! It's bad. And yet in amongst all the many problems, Card does somehow manage to create these amazing characters and some interesting ideas, and I can't quite let go of caring about it.

(why yes I DO have an entire post outlining my problems with this book!)

The very idea of the Pastwatch organization fascinated me when I was a teen, and especially the way that Tagiri approached it, moving further and further backwards in time in order to find the causes of things, and seeing ordinary individual humans to be immensely worthwhile.

Tagiri herself is presented as an oddball, an outsider, but this is never a BAD thing about her; it's a good thing that she's weird. Hunahpu as well is a wonderful oddball outsider and a nobody! The people Tagiri and her team study are people whose stories were lost to recorded history, but every single one of them matters. There are so many wonderful characters in this book, all trying their best to be good people according to what they see as good, struggling but caring, being themselves.

I feel like this is a book where the heart is somehow "everybody matters, ordinary people are valuable for being just as they are, everyone deserves good things, everyone deserves to be remembered" and then it got warped under the huge weight of Card's bigotry and also his love of Great Man History, to become....what it is.

So there are many things you could write here that would make me happy. Something that tells the story of the Pastwatch characters as it should have been told, or something that pushes back explicitly against the issues Card embedded in the narrative, or a small story about Tagiri (or Hunahpu, or anyone) just being their wonderful weird selves, or an expansion on the story of any of Tagiri's ancestors or the slaves from Tagiri's history of slavery project. Basically I'm just shoving the book at you going "this is problems, please help" lol. Please take that where you want to!
sophia_sol: photo of a 19th century ivory carving of a fat bird (Default)
Somehow it's yuletide season already, and I want to participate again for the first time in many years!

So far the fandoms I'm considering requesting are:

- a harrowing book from the pov of a violently misogynist man

- a heartwarming but out-of-print children's book about friendship

- a book that has so many of its author's prejudices on display that I can't actually recommend anyone else read it

so if I go ahead with these I WILL be the kind of difficult recipient where if you get matched to me on one fandom and decide you can't write that one, it will not be easy to pick up one of my other fandoms, oops

But I'm not committed to this roster, this is just my first round of brainstorming! Is there anything else I'm forgetting that I want fic for that I should consider requesting??? I have until the mid-September nomination deadline to decide!
sophia_sol: photo of a 19th century ivory carving of a fat bird (Default)
heyyyyyy it's yuletide season again, and once again I have barrelled my way through a truly astonishing number of fics in order to bring you a rec list of 10 of my favourites before the anon period is over! I hope you enjoy some of them too!

Rabbi Shaina Cohen Shows Great Patience And Fortitude
Yudah Cohen series by Rebecca Fraimow, gen, OCs & Yudah Cohen

Futurefic for the series, taking place in discussions on twitter, reddit, email, and texting about Yudah Cohen, past and present, and everything about it is just a total delight!

You Say Bark, I Say Bite
Sunshine by Robin McKinley, f/m/m, Con/Mel/Sunshine

Pre-OT3 from Mel's pov, this feels so right for them, and it's perfectly captured the eerie vibe of Con, from Mel's pov.

The Magic In The Making
Smoke series by Tanya Huff, m/m, Lee/Tony

I love the way this fic built up more of Lee's history and used it to show the deepening relationship between him and Tony, as well as the strong sense of the community with the rest of the characters, I had many feelings.

Notes on a Nondescript Vegetable
Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, m/m, Jack/Stephen

Stephen discovers a plant that seems to have sex-pollen-like effects. And oh my gosh I was blown away, the writer's grasp of the characters and their voices, the delicious narration with its incredible ability to evoke a mood, I love this fic SO MUCH. Jack and Stephen!!!!!!!!

(next year it'll be clear) this was only leading me to that
10 Things I Hate About You, m/f, Kat/Patrick

Following Kat and Patrick and the way their relationship develops over the years post-movie. I finished with such a smile on my face. I love how much Kat and Patrick have this trust and confidence in each other, and how much it shows in everything they do!

Bamboo Ambitions
Chinese history RPF, gen, Xiao He & Zhang Liang & Han Xin

Set during the time of the Chu-Han Contention, and tbh I had to google some things (like.....the chu-han contention) because I don't know enough about chinese history, but this fic was worth it! I really enjoyed the way the characters and their experiences are both humanized and also clearly a part of a greater story, in the way it was framed and told.

Kay the Scribe
Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner, m/m, Costis/Kamet & OC

Set during the time when Kamet and Costis are undercover in Roa, and I loved this outside pov on the two of them! Laris is a delight, and the way he's able to see things and piece together what's happening, and carefully make sure Kamet knows he's got his back, I love it. And you can really see how very much Costis is important to Kamet, even while he's barely on screen.

This Episode Brought To You By
Mr Queen, m/m & m/f, Bong-hwan/Cheoljong & So-yon/OC

Another fandom where I had to google things to follow along because I only know this show from having a friend explain it once and have never seen it, but it's so great! How much Bong-hwan feels the need to pose as a Cool Guy but obviously still feels very earnestly about things, how Cheoljong is fascinated by Bong-hwan and pays so much attention to trying to really understand the heart of him, how So-yon does her best to figure out how to be herself, whatever that looks like -- and how Bong-hwan and So-yon are both ultimately better off in each other's lives, each other's worlds. And the through-line of food tying it all together!

Only one question that can be answered
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin, gen, Genly Ai

Post-canon, Genly decides to retire to Gethen. And ahhhhhh this is so lovely and bittersweet and perfect.

honesty (is such a lonely word)
Nirvana in Fire, m/m, Mei Changsu/Prince Yu

Aaaaand a fandom that I know only from reading a bunch of fic, but hadn't previously had much exposure to the character of Prince Yu lol. But I loved getting his pov here, the ways Prince Yu both does and doesn't understand, and how captivated he is by Mei Changsu, and how clear it is that even if Mei Changsu is opposing him, it's not because Mei Changsu hates him or doesn't care about him, MCS just....has different priorities.
sophia_sol: photo of a 19th century ivory carving of a fat bird (Default)
oh hey I actually wrote a fic for the first time in uh 4 years! I don't know how all that time passed by. Anyway it was a yuletide treat, and as author reveals have now happened, I can share it. I'm pretty pleased with what I wrote; it's a bit different from the sorts of themes I usually find myself drawn to, but I really enjoyed writing it.

Fandom: The Cremation of Sam McGee - Robert Service
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Sam McGee & Narrator
Characters: Sam McGee, Narrator (Cremation of Sam McGee)
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat
Summary:

I've made a lot of promises in my life. Even kept a few of them, though I don't make a habit of it. What's the harm in telling someone what they want to hear?

sophia_sol: photo of a 19th century ivory carving of a fat bird (Default)
I like to post my top-ten yuletide fics before the end of the anon period, and I'm on top of things this year! Of course the archive is large and I'm sure I've missed some worthwhile works, and I thoroughly enjoyed a great number of the fics I read, but here's a list of some fics I think particularly worth reading. Presented in the order I read them.

Publish and/or Perish
The Snake Fight Portion of your Thesis Defense, gen, OCs

This was my fave of the many truly excellent additions to this totally wild fandom. I loved how matter of fact the snake-fights are as a normal part of academia in this world, just another thing to worry about amongst all of the trials and tribulations of being a grad student!

Varader Tau Cosplay: A Saga
Vorkosigan Saga, gen, OC's

A delightful look at a hypothetical fandom for a hypothetical tv show within the vorkosigan universe!

Learn
Spinning Silver, het, Miryem/Staryk Lord, Rebekah bat Flek

Lovely! I really enjoyed the continued connection Miryem makes with Rebekah and the importance of the traditions she shares, and of course the relationship between Miryem and her Staryk lord.

A Dreaming Art
Piranesi, gen, OC & Angharad Scott

This was lovely and fascinating and just what I needed after reading Piranesi! A great job of exploring the eurocentrism of the House in Piranesi by introducing another perspective.

Excerpts From the Letters of Sarah McBride Anderson, 1904-1908
Daddy-Long-Legs, gen, Sallie McBride

This fic is absolutely incredible, I love Sallie's voice and getting to see her perspective on the things that happened in the book, and on the things that are important to Sallie, and on Judy herself as well! And also I love that Sallie thinks Jervis is a rat because yuppppppp.

Psmith Pops In
Psmith, slash, Mike/Psmith

What a delight! Such delicious pining, and beautifully Psmithian turns of phrases, and Mike's solid Mikeness to balance Psmith out, I loved it.

Anonymous
18th Century RPF, gen, Voltaire & OC's

Incredible, and so funny! A look at a hypothetical argument on the authorship of Voltaire à la the Shakespearean authorship debate.

the enemy of my enemy
Locked Tomb, femslash, Gideon/Harrow

I was blown away and delighted, this was absolutely enormous amounts of fun to read, A+++++. A modern university au where Gideon and Harrow have to work together on a theatre project!

The Education of a Magician
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, gen, OCs

A schoolteacher marking an essay about Faerie. So lovely! I love the way that the student's paper brings back to the main character the sense of the numinous.

Adverse Event
Nirvana In Fire, slash, Mei Changsu/Jingyan

I love the way this fic makes use of the truth serum tropes with Mei Changsu, his desperate need to not say certain truths at any cost, and what he's willing to say to avoid it!
sophia_sol: photo of a 19th century ivory carving of a fat bird (Default)
When possible, I like to do a little post recommending my fave 10 yuletide fics of the year before the end of the anon period, which means reading everything in less than a week, and I am ON THE BALL this year!

Discipulae - A Little Princess, Becky & Sara, gen.
Becky and Sara and what they do after the end of the novel, each of them finding new things to learn and do but always prioritising their friendship with each other. I had feelings!

your name a kiss of snow - The Left Hand of Darkness, Genly/Therem, other.
Look it's another fic about their relationship with each other while they're on the icefield, I'm endlessly here for that, and this is a lovely example of the genre.

The Bones of the Hills - Discworld, Tiffany & the Nac Mac Feegle, gen.
The Nac Mac Feegle find a troll baby! And the narrative feel is just right, which can be hard to pull off for a fandom with such a distinctive voice.

Dawning Political Careers (and Other Public Disasters) - MacDonald Hall, Bruno/Boots, slash.
A "Bruno and Boots go to college" fic, which yes, has been done many times and done well many times, but I adored what this fic chose to do with the premise. A total delight to read!

A Series of Discoveries - Sorcerer Royal, Damerell/Rollo, slash.
The backstory of the gay interspecies human/dragon relationship that was a minor background feature of this duology. Completely adorable and charming, as is only right and fitting for the characters in question.

And pay the debt I never promised - Slings & Arrows, Geoffrey-centric, gennish but doesn't ignore canon relationships.
On Geoffrey's history with the Henriad over the years. A solid look at the character and at the world of the show, where everything intertwined so well that I got to the end of the fic surprised to discover that I had been somehow ambushed by a whole pile of carefully-hidden feelings over the course of reading it.

On Lsel, Hope is a False Memory - A Memory Called Empire, Shrja & Mahit & Yskandr, gen.
Shrja is the friend of Mahit's who also wanted to be chosen to be Yskandr's imago-heir and be the Teixcalaan ambassador. This is a look at her, in the immediate aftermath of the novel. Through the example of how different Shrja is from Mahit, the ways in which Mahit and Yskandr are so similar are highlighted. And Shrja's POV is great. (there were multiple truly excellent fics for this fandom in the archive this year, ftr, and I decided to choose just one for this rec list, but it was a hard choice between my top three!)

Light A Mourner's Candle - The Goblin Emperor, Maia, gen.
One of the many things I loved about the book was that the lead character in a fantasy novel was allowed to be religious in the way so many people are in reality. And this fic focuses on that, in the first meeting between Maia and the new chaplain who has been given to him, and it's so lovely to see how deeply meaningful the chaplain's support is to Maia. Yes I cried.

UXB - Rivers of London, Peter-centric, gen.
Casefic, wonderfully constructed - atmospheric, tense, emotional, and well-characterized. Really impressive!

The Book of the Queens of Old Earth in Exile - The Bible/Tanakh, Esther/Vashti, femslash.
I did not expect to come across a beautiful and thoughtful retelling of the book of Esther set in space where Ahasuerus is an insectoid alien? But uh this was incredible.
sophia_sol: photo of a 19th century ivory carving of a fat bird (Default)
My top ten yuletide fics this year!!

Every Sundown - Imperial Radch, gen, Breq & Seivarden. AU fic in which Seivarden is the ship and Breq the human captain, does really great things in reimagining their story through this framework

Drawing Water - Spinning Silver, gen, Rebekah bat Flek. An incredible fic about the Staryk girl who Miryem names, with wonderful details about what names mean to the Staryk and about how relationships between the Staryk and the humans are changing because of Miryem's arrival.

Piracy Is Our Only Option - Sense & Sensibility, gen, Margaret. A delightful brief epistolary fic about Margaret running off to sea!

Traces Through Time - Lord Peter Wimsey, het, Peter/Harriet & Miss Climpson. An AU in which Peter and Harriet are historical figures from the medieval period whom an academic named Katherine Climpson studies in the 1990's. I love the use of primary source documents to build a picture of this AU.

Nat Geo - The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, het, Doreen/Kraven. A hilarious and delightful and perfectly-in-tone-with-canon fic about Doreen being Kraven's plus one to a National Geographic event.

How It Was Then - Persuasion, het, Anne/Frederick & Sophia Croft. Sophia's perspective on her brother around the time when Frederick first had his heart broken by Anne. I love Sophia's pov and characterization.

Each Word Made True And Good - Little Men/Jo's Boys, femslash, Josie/ofc. An all-female production of Hamlet in which Josie plays Horatio. The way Josie throws herself so deeply into loving theatre and acting is so true to character, and watching her interact with her love interest was great.

the husband in the tower - Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, het, Arabella/Jonathan. Post-canon, Arabella decides to rescue her husband from his situation, which like, YES.

Learning To See A Future - Damar, gen, Harry & Corlath's daughter. Harry and Corlath's teenage daughter goes to live in Istan for a year, and her complicated relationship with the various sorts of people in Istan, and her homesickness but also her determination to see things through that need doing, are just so great.

Every Touch Until - The Blue Castle, het, Barney/Valancy. Does a marvelous job of Barney's POV over the course of Barney and Valancy's first year of marriage.

Yuletide!!

Dec. 25th, 2017 10:20 am
sophia_sol: photo of a 19th century ivory carving of a fat bird (Default)
This year for yuletide I got TWO FICS for Suradanna and the Sea! I AM SO DELIGHTED. Both of them are what-happens next, and I am amused to see some parallels between the two fics as to some of the things that both authors thought would probably happen - like, yup, accurate, Suradanna and the captain definitely aren't going to just spend all their time together forever starting immediately after the end of the original novella. Both fics were a delight, and what a perfect start to my christmas day. And one of them is 12k long!

I ended up having to default this yuletide, due to life circumstances beyond my control, which was really disappointing, but the gifts I've been given have made this a superb yuletide nonetheless.

The fics are:

Suradanna and the Tide (2361 words)
"Suradanna and the captain negotiate another life in Salamadan Port."

The Captain and the Shore (12385 words)

The Yuletide letters post for the year is up, which means it's once again time to post my letter!

DEAR AUTHOR,

I am so excited to know that you are going to be writing me a fic in one of my fandoms! I already know you have excellent taste, since you offered to write one of these fandoms, so I am sure that I will enjoy whatever it is you write for me, and I hope you have fun writing.

If you want to know more about my likes/dislikes and my thoughts about each fandom, please read on!

Hey so the fic I wrote for yuletide this year was the following!

One Step (1786 words) by sophia_sol
Fandom: Ella Enchanted - Gail Carson Levine
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Areida & Char & Ella (Ella Enchanted), Char/Ella (Ella Enchanted)
Characters: Areida (Ella Enchanted), Ella of Frell, Prince Charmont

Summary: On Ella and Char's first official state visit to Ayortha after King Jerrold's death and King Char's crowning, I did not expect to see them for more than a brief night's stopover. What would keep them in Amonta, after all, when the politics happen in the capital?

And now that reveals are past, I can also post my book thoughts about this book without revealing what I wrote for yuletide!

Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine

A charming retelling of the fairy tale Cinderella! I read this book a lot as a kid, and I still really like it. The basic premise: Ella was given a gift/curse by a fairy as an infant, and as a result she must be obedient to any direct commands from anyone.

My yuletide gift this year is just SO GOOD!!! I am utterly thrilled. My author wrote me a fic about the album Splendor & Misery in the style of the album and it is EVERYTHING I COULD HAVE WANTED, gosh. Highly recommended!

Fandom: Splendor & Misery - clipping. (Album)

Characters: Cargo 2331, The Computer (Splendor & Misery
Additional Tags: Loneliness, Artificial Intelligence, Finding Selfhood, What Makes for a Non-Human?, POV Second Person, Formatted to be Read Aloud, Impossible to Tag

Summary:
you have learned love but not self-consciousness, because love does not beget self. there’s no need for heart and body to love; no need for mind or soul though you have both, programmed for one and grew the other like a struggling sprout in a crack on the pavement, just for him, just like him.

The Passenger and the Computer, in the midst of the all black everything. Time once more has meaning, and humanity must be redefined.

Oh! I suppose I should mention the fics I wrote for yuletide - that was a thing that happened!

My assignment was to write a 12 Dancing Princesses fic, which was great fun. I always love writing fairy tale fic! My recipient articulated various particular themes of interest, all of which were things I could get behind, so I did my best to run with those. The hardest was giving the story a romantic happy ending. Me writing romance! Oh dear. So I gave the main character and her love interest a relationship founded on mutual trust and respect and liking, which I know is not the usual definition of romance but is probably as close as I'm able to come :P It seemed to go over well at any rate!

This is also the longest fic I've written in over four years, which I know isn't exactly impressive for a fic that's less than 3k words long, but it's major for me, and I'm very pleased with myself.

last dance for a ticket home (2665 words) by sophia_sol
Fandom: 12 Dancing Princesses (Fairy Tale), Fairy Tales & Related Fandoms
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Eldest princess/retired soldier
Additional Tags: Misses Clause Challenge
Summary:

As Helene and her sisters climbed slowly back up the long staircase in the early morning, she tried to summon up the determination and pride she used to feel - but she only felt tired. It had been another long night of dancing, and she could hardly bear to face the thought of doing it all over again the very next night.

I also wrote a treat, which was actually me finally finishing a fic I'd begun like half a year ago (whoops) for Mad Max: Fury Road. I'm pleased with how it turned out in the end!

don't want to look like someone else (1537 words) by sophia_sol
Fandom: Mad Max Series (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Toast the Knowing, Furiosa (Mad Max)
Additional Tags: Misses Clause Challenge, Post-Canon, Hair
Summary:

Furiosa is growing her hair. Toast doesn't know why it feels so strange to look at her and see a soft halo of hair beginning to form about her head. Toast had kept her own hair as short as she dared as a form of minor defiance against Immortan Joe's desires, and surely Furiosa had also constructed her appearance in reaction to the situation. Things have changed; hair can change too.

Oh hey yuletide reveals happened AGES AGO I should share what I wrote!

I ended up having to default on my assignment for the first time since I started doing yuletide five years ago, which was really frustrating and sad, but it was for the best, I think.

But I wrote a treat! Flytely, who introduced me to Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812, had requested it for Yuletide and after listening to the soundtrack approximately a million times I eventually felt capable of writing something. It is as follows:

Au grand jamais (1009 words) by sophia_sol
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 - Malloy
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sofia "Sonya" Alexandrovna Rostova (Great Comet of 1812), Natalya "Natasha" Ilyinichna Rostova (Great Comet of 1812)
Additional Tags: Friendship, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Sonya and Natasha, after everything.

I'm really pleased with its reception - although it's such a tiny fandom, it got three whole comments, and nine kudos! It also currently has far and away the best kudos:hits ratio of anything I've ever written.

I am happy with the fic I wrote, but writing it just made me realize the degree to which I want fic about Natasha and ALL THE FEMALE CHARACTERS IN THIS MUSICAL. Natasha and Princess Mary, Natasha and Marya D, Natasha and Helene, and heck Anna M shows up for all of a single line in the opera scene and based on what I know of Anna M from the book I would definitely read fic about Natasha and Anna M too.

Also just fic about Natasha. I HAVE SO MANY FEELS ABOUT NATASHA. NATASHAAAAAAAAAA.

(also I want fic about Natasha Rostova and Natasha Romanova. I don't know how this could happen given that they are from different centuries BUT I WON'T LET THAT STOP ME FROM WANTING IT.)
