antiques freaks podcast, on the author of the victorian novel "varney the vampire, or the feast of blood": this writer has all of victor hugo's verve and none of his intelligence or talent

a sick burn! (and accurate)

well, the end of an era, last week I deleted both my twitter accounts. I haven't even gone on twitter in ages at this point but now it's final. farewell to what used to be!

three

it's amazing how every single bird is perfectly beautiful and astonishing in its own way

I love how much I love birds. the amount of joy and wonder and awe they bring to me every single day is extraordinary

I love having a changelog on my website, where I keep track of what updates I've made, so I can see the progress over time! very satisfying.

and it feels great to be back at it, after a break of about a month where I wasn't making any updates due to other stuff going on in my life!

the website to-do list is long. but all good stuff! and I'll get to it all eventually!

antiques freaks has been releasing more of their varney the vampire episodes on their free feed and it's just SO funny, I love it so much. a Victorian penny dreadful which was published a chapter a week as the author wrote it, for 96 weeks in a row, and was a relatively early work of vampire fiction and surprisingly influential

it's a very silly story which the author clearly did not think very much about as he dashed down words as fast as he could, but I'm invested at this point! I might have to subscribe to the patreon for continued varney updates!

(yes I could just go on project gutenberg and get a free ebook and read the rest myself, but the commentary from Ken and D is vital to the experience)

the thing where, when you're well into writing a fic, you can go back and add a thing you just thought of -- and it becomes a seamless part of the early story! as if it's always been there! magic.

(actually I could shorten this just to: writing! magic.)

three

speaking of writing being magic, I'm somehow past 7k on my mxy wip? and I keep having to revise upwards my estimate of how long this thing is going to be! how many words am I going to write before the end?!

but I've reached the point in the where it's time to work on writing about wwx instead! the two storylines are going to be intertwined but I had to write most of mxy's half first before I could do the resurrected wwx parts

but I also can't finish the mxy parts until I do the rest, so I have a clearer sense on the right ending notes

so mxy is being abandoned mid-scene and he'll just have to wait for me to catch up with him

and in the meantime! my first time writing wwx!!!!

ok. holy shit. everyone on tumblr is so right about how funny gamechanger is. I watched one of the free episodes on youtube over my lunch break the other day and I was just. dying of laughing!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-6m0jW0X9E

me searching the ebird page for ways to download specific subsets of my stats: this is a hobby for nerds. for data nerds. there is going to be a spreadsheet download option SOMEWHERE.

(there was.)

and then oh my god in the csv file, the "category" column categorises each sighting by whether it's a "species" or a "spuh".

"spuh" is for sightings where you put in, like, "gull sp." because you don't know what species of gull you saw.

I LOVE THIS.

NERDS.
